Zayed University - UAE Reading Year 2016

On the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Cabinet has approved the declaration of 2016 as the UAE Reading Year, which was announced on the 5th of December, 2015. The Cabinet therefore issued a number of directives to start preparing an integrated national literacy strategy and a framework to produce a reading generation and to establish the UAE as the capital of culture and knowledge.

Therefore, based on this guidance and according to H.E Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, President of Zayed University, we have worked on developing a number of initiatives to turn the University campus into a reading oasis. The University administration, moreover, always urges its student to grasp various forms of culture and knowledge that enable them to develop their personalities and empower them as future thinkers and researchers. The University also promotes the academic and extra-curricular activities that help us achieve these goals.

H.E Sheikha Lubna AL Qasimi has accordingly started the initiatives of the Reading Year by launching a project entitled “Read” in order to promote the culture of reading in the University community, to enrich students with Arabic and world literature, and to deepen the Arabic identity through reading the books of our elite Arab scientists and thinkers.

Organizing seminars in the book club at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences:

The "Book Club" is organizing a number of seminars led by college professors about the club's most important literary publications. The club is chaired by one of the college's faculty members in rotation, and students will select books to read individually. The books will not necessarily be from the curriculum of their college; however, the books chosen by the club are literary books and specialized magazines.

Poetry Session

In the frame of the Reading Year Committee instructions at Zayed University, the department of the library and common learning is organizing a poetry session in November 2016, which coincides with the celebrations of UAE National Day. The session will be attended by a number of speakers, and there will be a number of other activities organized at the same time.

Reading at Home (Session in September 2016)

A session was conducted by a Faculty member from the College of Education and organized by the Early Childhood Learning Center, addressing parents, faculty and students in the Center on the subject of “Reading at Home for your Children.” The session was also delivered by two students from the Early Childhood Learning Course EDC386.
