The following events are part highlights the activities of the strategic plan to spread awareness in Zayed University:


White Cane Day 2011:

     

The 2nd internal Annual White Cane Day was celebrated on October 17th , 2011 at Zayed University, Dubai Campus and a day of workshops and informative activities was organized by Zayed Uniersity's  Office of Accessibility in collaboration with Tamkeen, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Affairs. This day aimed to raise awareness about visual impairment and participation from students, faculty and staff was significant.

White Cane Day 2010:

     

A workshop was conducted by the Office of Accessibility in collaboration with Tamkeen on October 17th to celebrate the International White Cane Day. It consisted of orientation and mobility training for sighted students at Zayed University in dealing with individuals with visual impairment. There was positive interaction between the presenter and the students. students were blindfolded and given a cane and then were orientated by the presenter. This was an enlightening and practical experience in Raising awareness of being blind.

Disability Awareness Week:

     

A three day Disability Awareness campaign was organized by the Office of Accessibility and the Dubai Early Childhood Development Center from the 26th to the 28th of November. The lectures included:

1) Early intervention

2) Inclusion

3) Developing Screening

Staff were asked to bring their children, aged one through six to be screened. On the last day, following the lectures, the Center conducted hands on screening and assessment for the children.


Wheelchair Day:

     

A successful Wheelchair Awareness Day in collaboration with Dubai Club for Special Sports was organized on 22nd November, 2010. The activity involved 10 volunteers spending 4 hours on wheelchairs while doing their routine daily activities. The activities were designed to show how accessible Zayed University campus is toward wheelchair users. It concluded with a report of comments from all the volunteers.


Special Needs Handicraft Exhibition:

     

The Special Needs Handicraft Exhibition was inaugurated by Sheikha Maryam Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid AlMaktoum on 28th November. The Office of Accessibility hosted a 3-day exhibition in which various special needs centers exhibited their handicrafts from November 28-30th. The centers showcased students’ talents which helped raise awareness among Zayed University students. Given the overwhelming success of the exhibition, it was extended until 1st December.
