Working Groups: Migrant Labor in the Gulf
Jane Bristol-Rhys has been invited to participate in the Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS) Georgetown/Doha major research initiative on migrant labor in the Gulf. Jane will attend discussion/roundtable meetings there in January and May 2010 and will have a chapter in the book to be published next summer. The title is planned to be: Kept in Place: An analysis of the socio-spatial boundaries that separate migrants and nationals in the UAE. Further info athttp://cirs.georgetown.edu/research/
The CIRS research initiative on migrant labor is designed to last for approximately two years, at the end of which CIRS will publish its findings in a comprehensive study of the subject.

UAE Center for Bilingualism and Bilingual Education
Zayed University is currently in the process of establishing an NRF-funded Research Excellence Center devoted to Bilingualism and Bilingual Education. The UAE Center for Bilingualism and Bilingual Education will be engaged in multilingualism research with the express aim to generate knowledge about and to promote academic and professional proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and English among Arabic-speaking peoples of the UAE, the Gulf, and the wider Arab world. Research Activity at Zayed University: Results of the faculty survey
December 2008
A high response rate of 115 completed surveys were an indication in December last year of the strong interest that faculty express in research at Zayed University.Faculty were not shy to express their perceptions of positive and negative factors influencing their potential to engage in a research agenda. A copy of the brief findings together with recommendations made as a result of this survey are linked here.
We look forward to a repeat survey in December of this year, to compare our perceived accomplishments in supporting and encouraging research over the 12 month period.

Research Incentive Fund (RIF) - Seeking Applications
The Research Incentive Fund offers all faculty an opportunity to apply for a competitive grant to be able to undertake research within the next 1-2 years. Grants range from up to 40,000 AED for an individual grant to up to 75,000 AED for a small group or interdisciplinary grant. Applications should be received by the Office of Research research@zu.ac.ae by 26 April, 2009. Provost's Research Fellowship Awards
Dr. Daniel Johnson, Provost of Zayed University, has just announced the winners of the prestigious "Provost's Research Fellowship Awards" for Spring semester, 2009. The inaugural winners will be supported in their research endeavors by the funding of substantial time release from the normal teaching load of faculty, to enable them to concentrate on completion of their research projects.
As Dr. Johnson has pointed out, "The Research Fellowship Awards have been newly established to encourage both a high quality of research output from Zayed University, and the development of world-standard research capacity and collaborations." Zayed University is proud to be successful with recent UAE National Research Foundation grants, as well as encouraging innovation in new research support and developments, such as this Research Fellowship Award.
The winning researchers for this semester are:
Dr. Caroline Haddad "A national study on the health of the UAE population: Geographical differences in exposures and outcomes." This research is supported by the Ministry of Education, builds on a very creditable research record of Dr. Haddad, and directly supports UAE strategic goals to understand and improve the health of the UAE population.
Dr. Jacqueline Armijo-Hussein: "Civilizing Yunnan: Islam on the margins of the Chinese Empire". Dr. Armijo-Hussein is developing this research in the important topic of the literature of Islam, and is making a valuable contribution to this field by working with a variety of primary resource materials not hitherto documented or analyzed.
Dr. Drew Gardner: "Handbook and atlas of the reptiles and amphibians of the United Arab Emirates and Oman." Dr. Gardner is a world authority on desert fauna, and is now working to publish a book on this topic which will document and preserve part of the vital UAE ecosystem for future generations.
This inaugural Award at Zayed University will now be offered each semester, to foster an ongoing development of high quality of research output from Zayed University. All current winners should be warmly congratulated, and encouraged in their ongoing research programs.
