Zayed University offers a variety of services related to public health, including preventive education and health consulting. Every year, the University carries out different activities around health campaigns that promote a healthy lifestyle and well-being. For ZU, it is essential to create awareness in all people about the risks of not taking care of one’s health. ZU carries out activities that are jointly with the local community, students and staff to improve health in UAE.

ZU Health Services

Zayed University clinics are responsible for providing health services in the form of primary care and emergency interventions. The clinics offer medical support and accommodations for students with chronic and acute health conditions. ZU clinics also play an active role in promoting health and wellness through ongoing campaigns and activities.

The Wellness Center in Dubai is operated by Dubai Health Authority (DHA). The ZU clinic in Abu Dhabi is operated by the Canadian Medical Center (CMC).

University Health Clinics Policy

Purpose

This policy ensures Zayed University’s commitment to provide high quality health and wellness services to the entire Zayed University community.

Scope of Application

This policy applies to the entire University community.

Policy

  • Zayed University (“University”) is committed to enhancing the health and wellbeing of the entire University community.

  • The University Health Clinics (“Clinics”) will identify potential risks and hazards that might compromise the health and wellbeing of all members of the University community, and take the necessary measures to eliminate or mitigate those risks to promote a safe and healthy environment.

  • The Clinics will provide adequate medical facilities, a safe environment, specialized equipment, and qualified licensed medical staff to ensure the provision of high-quality medical services to the University community.

  • The Clinics will provide health services on campus during normal University working hours and at other officially sanctioned times.

  • The Clinics must have clear guidelines regarding internal and external reporting between the University and the designated health services provider.

  • The University will establish agreements for the Clinics on both campuses for the services being outsourced where agreements between the University and the health provider will be considered as part of the contract.

Liability

  • The Clinics will employ, subcontract, or hire in secondment Department of Health, Abu Dhabi (“DOH”) or Dubai Health Authority (“DHA”) licensed doctors and nurses only.

  • Culturally appropriate standards will be adhered to in conduct with all patients and guardians.

  • Patients and/or guardians of students under 21 years of age will have access to adequate information and resources as needed within the means and limits of the Clinics, including referral services.

Academic Support for Students with Health Conditions

  • To avail academic accommodations students with health conditions must submit valid and up-to-date medical reports to the clinics through the online application process.

  • The student’s condition will be reviewed and assessed by the Clinic’s doctor and a report containing the appropriate accommodations will be produced. Reports must be approved by the Director of the Student Counseling Center. Reports will be shared directly with the student.

  • All student information and medical reports will be shared only with the Student Counseling Center, and it will be kept strictly confidential and will not be released without the student’s consent.

Local, Regional, Global Emergencies and Crises

  • In cases of local, regional, and global emergencies and crises, the Clinics will develop appropriate processes and programs to ensure the continuity of services in line with the Ministry of Health and Prevention guidelines, in addition to other governmental health authorities (DOH, DHA), and the University’s regulations and guidelines.

  • In case of a shutdown, the Clinics will be closed, and the patients will be referred to external health services.

  • In case of crises that require working remotely (such as a pandemic), the Clinics will provide health services by phone, or virtually using the University E-Health System.

  • The Clinics will collaborate with different campus departments during crises and follow the campus emergency response protocol when dealing with crises.

Student Counselling

Student Counseling Center (SCC) at ZU provides psychological support and help to currently registered students. The services aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing that is responsive to the ZU community and UAE culture. SCC supports the ZU community through crisis intervention, health issues accommodations, and outreach and consultation services. The Center’s services are available free of charge to all registered ZU students.

Wellbeing Ambassadors Program

Wellbeing Ambassadors Program is an innovative initiative designed to enhance the physical, emotional, and social health of our university community. Our Wellbeing Ambassadors (WAs) are dedicated students, staff, and faculty members who serve as champions for holistic health and well-being on campus.

All Wellbeing Ambassadors participate in an enrichment program designed to provide them with a holistic view of wellbeing. Through workshops, training sessions, and collaborative projects, our WAs gain valuable insights and practical skills that empower them to help others, help themselves, and make a positive impact on campus using an international peer-to-peer approach.

Student Wellbeing Ambassadors have the opportunity to map the skills they acquire through the enrichment program and their participation in various activities to the capabilities measured in the university and gain volunteer hours certificates. This ensures that contributions to the well-being of the community are recognized and valued.

Self-Help Resources

A variety of self-help resources are offered on many topics. These resources are useful in helping students understand issues or concerns they may encounter. Some of these resources may be used in individual counselling or might be recommended by the counsellor. These resources are provided for stress and anxiety, depression, self-harm.

Health Awareness Village

Corniche Hospital, in partnership with Zayed University organized ‘Health Awareness Village’ event. During this event, experts on multiple health topics provide information to students and employees in the fields of:

  • Medication

Healthy Minds at Work Seminar on World Mental Health Day

An online seminar on Healthy Minds at Work was offered to faculty and staff, in collaboration with Workplace Options as part of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is designed to provide confidential assistance and a range of support services tailored to the unique needs of our academic community to support the well-being of the faculty.

EAP is a confidential support service to enhance the overall well-being of faculty. It offers:

  • Confidential Counseling and Coaching: Access professional and confidential counselling and coaching services to address personal or work-related challenges.

  • 24/7 Support: Life doesn't adhere to a schedule, and neither does our EAP. Access support whenever you need it, day or night.

  • Wellness Resources: Explore various resources and tools to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

This online seminar is a recorded, on-demand event that will be released on 10 October 2024. Participants will benefit by being able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of common mental health challenges in themselves and their colleagues 

  • Understand how to prioritize mental health in personal daily routines and manage their work-life balance effectively 

  • Acquire conversational tools to discuss mental health concerns with peers and superiors in a constructive manner 

  • Utilize effective coping strategies for resilience when faced with workplace challenges, pressures and uncertainties

Student Counseling Center Policy

Purpose

To establish guidelines for offering Zayed University students with counseling services that are effective, efficient, and of the highest professional quality.

Scope of Application

This policy is applicable to all Zayed University students.

Policy

  • Zayed University (“University”) provides professional counseling services to students through the Student Counseling Center (“SCC”) to support their wellbeing and personal growth.

  • The SCC offers two (2) main types of service, preventative and restorative, to help students reach their personal and academic goals.

  • The SCC is committed to offering students of determination academic accommodations to remove barriers to their education and learning. If a mental health condition leads to an impairment in functioning, academic accommodations can be provided to improve student accessibility to learning materials and activities.

  • Counseling services are offered in accordance with the standards prescribed by the American Counseling Association (“ACA”), the professional guidelines prescribed by the International Association of Counseling Services (“IACS”) and the UAE Ministry of Health (“MOH”)’s medical code of ethics.

  • Counselors at the SCC are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with the University Code of Ethics as well as the standards of practice prescribed by the counseling profession. It is expected that counselors fulfill their primary responsibility to respect the integrity and promote the welfare of their clients. When the prescribed ethical and professional standards of conduct are breached it is considered misconduct.

  • Students seeking counseling sessions will be provided with time-limited confidential counseling. Students may access up to 12 individual sessions.
    • The session limit may be renewed if the student is unable to access community resources due to financial or family limitations.
    • The renewal of confidential counseling sessions is determined through an agreement between the counselor and the student concerned, based on the current issue, the availability of resources, and the student’s extended need.
    • Students may access an unlimited number of workshops, groups, and trainings.
  • Counseling can be terminated when counseling goals and/or session limits have been reached, or upon the student’s request. The termination of a counseling service must be a joint decision of the client and counselor with respect to the client's autonomy.

  • The SCC collaborates with other academic and service units on campus to provide students with comprehensive care. Each student’s right to confidentiality is upheld during collaboration with the other units.

  • In order to maintain the standards of the profession as well as the administrative independence and neutrality that is required of the center, counselors do not extend their services to:
    • Participation in any committees related to administrative proceedings, (e.g., student discipline investigations), except where the purpose of participation is limited to the clarification of a student’s psychosocial situation.
    • Participation in administrative decision making (e.g., leave of absence, withdrawal, or readmission to academic programs), except in situations when colleges/administration offices seek a counselor’s evaluation of a student’s mental health status and/or psychosocial issues. Reports produced by the counseling center require a minimum of two (2) evaluation sessions and aim to provide colleges/administration with information clarifying the student’s situation but does not make a recommendation regarding the administrative decision at hand.
  • The SCC offers counseling services to support students’ personal and academic wellbeing and help students manage psychological difficulties. Lifesaving services are beyond SCC’s capabilities and scope of practice. Emergencies are to be referred to emergency services.

Crisis Intervention Services

  • Crisis intervention is provided to students in acute emotional or physical distress. The goal of crisis intervention is to provide clients with immediate safety and emergency care, stabilization of emotions, and plan for further follow up.

  • Crisis intervention is offered during the center’s regular hours of operation. After regular hours, students in crisis are advised to contact available community help lines and emergency services.

  • A step-by-step Crisis Intervention Protocol is routinely reviewed and updated by SCC staff. A printed copy is made available in all SCC offices.

Outreach Services

The SCC offers outreach services including programs that promote awareness of mental health and wellbeing, break the stigma, and promote help seeking. These services have the primary goal of reaching out to students who may not be inclined to utilize the services from the center.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Zayed University’s Student Counseling Center, in cooperation with the student life department, organized a Breast Cancer event and bazaar in the Atrium with the slogan “Think Pink Campaign” to raise and promote health awareness among the students and faculty at Zayed University.

During the main event there were many smaller events contributing to increase the knowledge of students about the factors that lead to breast cancer and how it can be detected and prevented. There was a medical screening by the Dubai Health Authority where they taught students how to check themselves for breast cancer, blood sugar levels and blood pressure tests. A nutritionist also offered students advice on food that might cause and help fight cancer.

“If a patient can stay positive, they have a better chance to fight the illness” said Joan Abdallah from Student Counseling Center as they had a booth that presented the psychological effects of dealing with cancer and how being positive is so important.

Zayed University library and learning commons also joined the event displaying books about cancer and very touching posters for students to attach messages on for breast cancer patients.

There was also a pink photo booth where students would get dressed up in pink and take photos and the money that was made in that booth went to charity.

Zayed University Launches UAE's First Master of Science in Counselling Psychology Program to Address Adult Mental Health Challenges

Zayed University is pleased to announce the launch of the first Master of Science in Counselling Psychology program in the UAE, designed to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in a variety of careers in adult mental health settings in both public and private sectors such as business, healthcare, and education. The announcement aligns with the UAE's National Wellbeing Strategy 2031 and the National Policy for the Promotion of Mental Health, where improving the population’s mental health is a key priority.

The program, which will be taught by select professors from the College of Natural and Health Sciences, will be available to students from Fall 2023, and will be offered over four semesters on the Zayed University Abu Dhabi campus. To allow students to practise the theory in a workplace setting, two internships will be completed. Participants will have access to a range of resources and support services that Zayed University offers, including dedicated faculty and staff, state-of-the-art facilities, and a vibrant student community.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of the new Master of Science in Counselling Psychology, which represents the latest offering available to prospective students at Zayed University," said Dr Gaelle Picherit-Duthler, Acting Dean of Graduate Studies at Zayed University. "The program will provide students with a deep understanding of the psychology field, furnishing them with the expertise, knowledge and skills required to apply psychological theories and models to help adult populations with a range of psychological concerns.”

Dubai Foundation for Women and Children celebrates World Mental Health Day at Zayed University

The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC) is organising its unique "Know Me" game event to coincide with World Mental Health Day, which is celebrated worldwide on 10th October every year, with the aim of improving knowledge, raising awareness and advancing measures that promote and protect mental health for all as a universal human right. The

event is being organised at Zayed University today with the aim of building relationships and deepening knowledge among individuals in the immediate environment, whether friends or family members, as the idea of ​​the "Know Me" game revolves around asking questions that reveal different aspects of the personalities of family members and friends, including their interests, experiences and dreams.

Through this interactive game, the Foundation seeks to strengthen social ties between participants and get to know each other more deeply in an atmosphere of fun and positive interaction.

Her Excellency Sheikha Saeed Al Mansouri, Acting Director General of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, said that this event aims to enhance effective communication between individuals, as building positive relationships contributes to enhancing mental health and social stability. Interactive games such as the “Know Me” game designed by the Foundation are an effective means to achieve this.

She added that organizing this event comes within the framework of the Foundation’s keenness to organize many events and activities targeting children and families with the aim of enhancing health, psychological and social awareness, noting that these events include workshops, seminars, awareness campaigns, story reading sessions and other interactive activities that aim to empower families and enhance their role in raising psychologically and socially healthy children.

It is noteworthy that these activities are part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to keep pace with Dubai Social Agenda 33, which focuses on strengthening family ties and providing a supportive and encouraging environment for healthy and safe living, achieving the happiest, most connected and tolerant families, adhering to national values ​​and identity, and reaching the most efficient and quality health system that keeps pace with the best international standards by promoting healthy lifestyles and developing the quality of health, preventive, physical and psychological services at an acceptable cost. There will be a special platform for the game “Know Me” at the university, in addition to distributing the game to female students to practice it and disseminating it to their families to achieve the greatest benefit and expand the scope of the outputs in order to achieve the goals for which the game was launched.

ADHD Awareness Talk

Zayed University organized an awareness session on ADHD that was delivered by Dr. Joseph Guirguis, a clinical psychiatrist from the American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology in Abu Dhabi. The invitation to this session was extended to students, faculty and staff. 

Dr. Guirguis delivered a talk on ADHD awareness tailored to adult students, faculty, and staff at Zayed University. With extensive experience in treating neurodevelopmental disorders, Dr. Guirguis discussed ADHD symptoms, including attention difficulties, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, especially in academic settings. Dr. Guirguis also addressed the common misconceptions about ADHD and highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. 

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how ADHD affects learning, time management, and interpersonal relationships, and will learn about strategies for managing these challenges.

The session highlighted the resources available and provided actionable steps for students and staff who may be living with ADHD or supporting someone with the condition. Dr. Guirguis’s talk aimed to foster a supportive and inclusive environment at Zayed University by increasing awareness and understanding of ADHD, helping individuals thrive academically and professionally despite the challenges posed by the condition.

Zayed University explores major opportunities with Appolonia Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry

Zayed University (ZU) has signed an MoU with Appolonia World for Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, one of the most significant pediatric dental centers in the Middle East, for research collaboration activities that aim to improve the oral and dental health of children and teens, and to provide students with work experience in a structured environment.

The ceremony was held at Zayed University’s Abu Dhabi campus in the presence of the University Provost & Chief Academic Officer, Professor. Clayton MacKenzie, Professor Fares Howari, Dean, College of Natural and Health Sciences, Dr. Yaser Haj Hamed, Appolonia Founder & Orthodontist, Professor Waleed Al Saadi, Consultant Pediatric Dentist & Medical Director of Appolonia group, and a notable audience of dentists and professionals with great interest in advanced research in the medical and dentistry field.

Commenting on the collaboration, Professor MacKenzie, said: "The two institutions possess technical expertise and capabilities that will undoubtedly contribute to the positive outcomes of this cooperation, particularly in the areas of training and academic research, which will bring mutual benefits to students, researchers and the community alike.”

“This collaboration will grant us access to a local clinical and oral health information database,” said Professor Howari. “Appolonia Pediatric Dental Centers have done several surveys on the social, and psychological determinants of oral health.” He further added, “Our partners will run further studies for us at no cost using their own resources. We also planned to organize joint-awareness campaigns to reach out to schools which could eventually help in recruiting potential students from ZU. Moreover, this partnership grants some of our students internship opportunities with Appolonia Advanced Pediatric Dental Center in the near future.”

Ministry of Health, Zayed University to cooperate in health sector research and development

Ministry of Health and Prevention, MoHAP, and College of Natural and Health Sciences at Zayed University, have agreed to develop a framework for joint cooperation in research activities, conducting research in the field of health, and studying the economic indicators of the health sector in the country.

To this effect, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Ministry's office in Dubai. The Ministry was represented by Alya Zaid Harbi, Director of the Statistics and Research Center, while the College of Natural and Health Sciences at Zayed University was represented by Dr. Michael Allen, Research Assistant.

The two sides agreed to carry out joint research activities, share statistical data related to health, participate in conferences organised by the ministry and the university, and support the research committees of the ministry with regard to health sciences and training in research methodology, statistics and vital statistics.

The Director of the Statistics and Research Centre highlighted the importance of this MoU with Zayed University in establishing cooperation between the two sides, exchanging experiences, facilitating training, data and studies related to the development of the health situation in the country, improving the level of health research in the country, and promoting innovation and research to make the UAE one of the leading countries in the field of health research.

She underscored the Centre's keenness to cooperate with universities and specialisedcolleges locally and internationally, associate with organisations interested in medical and health research for preparing research and studies, work on the exchange of research and medical studies, and develop health services and raise the level of health services in the country. In addition, she said the Centre also sought to implement regular health surveys at the country level in cooperation with the World Health Organisation or any other local or international entity, in the fields of medicine and public health.

Dr. Allen welcomed the strengthening of cooperation with the Ministry in the field of health research, noting that this initiative consolidated the general and comprehensive framework for coordination of efforts and visions that help government decision makers find sustainable solutions to health issues by developing strategic partnerships in specialised research.

Allen also highlighted the University’s keenness to participate in studies, scientific research, surveys and statistics, as well as facilitate the exchange of experiences to strengthen strategic partnerships between the two sides and carry out research work in accordance with best global practices.

Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital collaborates with Zayed University to support the elderly with an art mural

Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, affiliated with Emirates Health Services, collaborated with Zayed University students for installing an art mural at the hospital to mark World Alzheimer's Day on September 21 to raise community awareness about the condition.

The initiative’s purpose was to shed light on the difficulties faced by those suffering from Alzheimer's and other memory disorders, through an artwork that showcases the Emirati society's and the beauty of is history in addition to expressing hope and memories.

Dr. Noor Al Muhairi, Director of Mental Health Department at EHS, stated that the art mural represents memories and hope, and it serves as an invitation to understand the circumstances experienced by of Alzheimer's Disease patients and to provide psychosocial support to them. The mural also depicts the Emirati society's unity as well as the beauty of its heritage and history, through an artistic interpretation that aims to enhance social integration and mutual understanding among all members of the society.

She added that EHS is committed to providing comprehensive and integrated therapeutic services to all members of the UAE community, and that it has launched several initiatives aimed at various age groups. EHS especially focuses on the well-being of the elderly, particularly Alzheimer's patients who require specialized care that contributes to their wellbeing and reduces the burden and complications of the disease.

Dr. Ammar Albanna, Directorof Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, one of EHS’ hospitals, said that the celebration of World Alzheimer's Day through the mural is part of the efforts of EHS to highlight the role of the family and society in enhancing the quality of life of seniors suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Ammar praised Zayed University's female students in the College of Arts for their remarkable initiative and creative spirit. They created a distinctive artistic concept for a mural, drawing inspiration from Emirati families’ reality. He further emphasized that the initiative establishes a precedent for collaborative design efforts involving the university, healthcare practitioners, and patients.

Dr. Ammar also discussed the specialized psychiatric care program for seniors launched by EHS in collaboration with "Maudsley Health", and its role in educating health care workers and doctors in adhering to the highest international standards and providing the best specialized psychiatric care to seniors.

A treatment unit specialized in mental health of Older Adults

The hospital's celebration of the event comes at a time when EHS is enhancing its services for seniors and upholding the best international practices in the field of mental health. Adding onto that, it opened the first specialized mental health treatment unit for older adults in October 2021, which is the first of its kind in the UAE.

Purpose

This policy will regulate the use of spaces on campus for best utilization and to ensure proper practice while using any space on campus.

Scope of Application

This policy is applicable to all university facilities except the Convention Center, and to all university faculty, staff, and students.

  • Zayed University facilities are intended for use primarily by university personnel for university purposes.
