Coinciding with the anniversary of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s assumption of office as the leader of the country, Zayed University celebrated the UAE Flag Day last Thursday on both its campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of State for Tolerance and President of Zayed University, led the flag-raising ceremony in Abu Dhabi with employees from the Ministry of Tolerance and Zayed University, as the flag was being raised simultaneously around the country.

The UAE flag-raising ceremony came in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who called for launching a nationwide campaign to unite the hearts of all Emiratis and reaffirm allegiance to the nation and its leadership.

With the participation of hundreds of faculty members, staff, and students and during the National Anthem, Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna raised the UAE flag up high into the sky at the central courtyard in Abu Dhabi campus, while Professor Reyadh AlMehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University, led the flag-raising ceremony in Dubai campus.

Zayed University Student Council members presented a short program, where they emphasized the importance of the UAE flag and explained indication of its traditional pan-Arab colors. They pointed out that red represents hardiness, bravery, strength and courage, while green represents hope, joy, optimism and love. White color represents peace and honesty and black- contrary to popular belief- stands for the defeat of enemies, and also strength of mind.

A highlight of the Student Council program was a poetry reading by Zayed University students to show patriotism and reiterate love and pride for the homeland.

Additionally, students showed immediate enthusiasm, raised flags high into the sky, and released balloons to show their loyalty and sincere love for their homeland.

Created in 1971 for the country’s formation, the flag of the UAE is a symbol of much pride for Emiratis. Like the flag of every nation, it is respected and treated with honor by citizens and residents alike.
