Zayed University kicked off its Majors Day at Abu Dhabi campus in a successful attempt to help freshman feel more comfortable with decisions pertaining to their chosen major.

The Department of Advising and Academic Development at Zayed University organized a one-day event, which saw various colleges, advisors and students, who seek to explore majors, meet with undergraduate studies advisors and set up informational interviews with their consultants.

“Academic advising is an integral part of each student’s educational experience and a key success to any institution of higher learning. Also, academic advisers and consultants are valuable resources to students as they plan their undergraduate careers and, eventually, prepare for graduation,” Prof. Reyadh AlMehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University, said during the inauguration of the Majors Day.

The one-day event saw hundreds of Academic Bridge Programme (ABP) students and more than six colleges.

Teachers and professors have also showed a great interest in helping students to choose their majors and therefore, their future careers.

“Majors Day is organized every semester at Zayed University as an initiative to help students make informed decisions about their major exploration, academic policies and procedures. Students inquired about labor market needs and majors that are fulfilling those needs today”, Dr. Lanc Khan, Assistant Professor at University College in Zayed University, said.

On the sidelines of the event, teachers highlighted that major exploration process can be much more enjoyable and less stressful for students through advisors, who play both formal and informal roles as they assist undeclared students.

“It is important to remember that discovering your major is a process and advisors are here to help all along the way,” Dr. Adam Jeffers, Assistant Professor at University College with over 15 years of experience, said.

When asked about the most common question that male students inquire about while choosing their majors, he answered: “Most of male students are now looking to join female-dominated industries. Male students are increasingly looking for jobs in education and management, believing that they are no less competitive than female counterparts in the workplace,” Dr. Jeffers added.
