Zayed University's Action 2015 raises Dh107,000 to alleviate the suffering of Syrian and Palestinian refugees
A total of Dh107,000 was raised from Action project to alleviate the suffering and provide relief for Syrian and Palestinian refugees.
The announcement came during an event held on Wednesday at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi campus with the attendance of hundreds of students and faculty members.
Action 2015 Service Learning Week is a co-curricular project based on the Academic Bridge Programme (ABP) curriculum that has a focus on the topic of humanitarian aid. The service-learning week officially began on March 2 and ended on March 5 with the participation of around 800 ABP students and faculty members.
“The event came as a successful implementation of humanitarian strategies in the UAE. It is a research project in which social responsibility is a key skill. It prepares students for life beyond campus and teaching them how to give back to their community,” Prof. Reyadh AlMehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University, said earlier during the inauguration of Action 2015.
Dr. Wayne Jones, Director of ABP at Zayed University, was pleased to announce that Action 2015 ABP Service Learning Week raised a total of Dh107,000, which will go towards providing relief for Syrian and Palestinian refugees in collaboration with the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) in the UAE.
“It is great to see Zayed University students not only excel in their academic performance, but also in other extracurricular activities and service learning projects at the university,” Dr. Jones said.
Certificates of appreciation were distributed to ABP distinguished participants at Action service learning project.
Action activities varied between bake sales, t-shirt sales, contests, and an ABP walkathon that was held with the participation of more than 50 students and faculty members.
The ABP places a strong emphasis on academic learning, as well as encouraging students to be socially responsible.
“During this project, ABP student gained a greater understanding of why people become refugees or internally displaced persons and the effects it has on people’s lives,” Jay Trimiar, an instructor at ABP and the project organizer, said.
The event, which was held under the patronage of Sheikha Shama Bint Khalifa Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, President of Alumni Association Board at ZU, was also attended by Shamsa Al Taie, Director of Students Affairs, Amal Al Khouri, Activities and Events Manager at the Students Affairs, and Dr. Kay Gallagher, Associate Director at ABP.
