Information Technology Competition kicks off at ZU

Abu Dhabi, 29 April 2011 (WAM) - The college of Information Technology at Zayed University Abu Dhabi a new IT contest for national and international students from 42 different universities to choose the best IT project by universities students that is in collaboration with the Software Engineering Research Laboratory (GELOG) in Montreal in Canada that aims to motivate the undergraduate students to participate in this competition.

The competition is sponsored by Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Injazat Data Systems, Al Jaber Group and Municipality of Abu Dhabi City.

Around 118 project were admitted from 42 different universities from 17 countries that are Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, KSA, Morocco, Algeria, Sudan, , Kuwait, India, Oman, Bahrain, Pakistan, Qatar and UAE.

Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim, Vice President of Zayed University, said : "The contest got an overwhelming response from national and international universities thus, reflects the high awareness level of the new generations in the field of IT and their enthusiasm to stay up-to-date with the rapid development of technology ." On her part Dr. Manar Abu Talib, Professor in the College of Information Technology, said that the competition has three categories. the first category is ZISE Web Application: where the students will create a complete web application for Zayed Institute for Software engineering. The web application will include all the information about ZISE as well as a full implementation for all its services.

The second category is UOBSERVE Software Specification: The students have to study the UOBSERVE Software Specification to find out the defects. The competition is about finding the highest number of defects in that document.

Experts can find up to 200 defects. The students are encouraged to look at standards and models to help them finding these defects and give suggestions of how to improve the document. The third category is IT Project: The students may implement a complete IT application in order to solve an existing problem. The students can be creative to demonstrate their IT skills in many field such as Computer Forensics, Computer Programming, Web Applications Development, Telecommunications.

The Judge committee consisted of more than 6 experts who rated the best winning projects of the three categories with a total number of 10 winning projects of prizes that are : ZISE Web Application: AED 10,000 for the 1st place, AED 7,000 for the 2nd place and AED 5,000 for the 3rd place. UOBSERVE Software Specification: AED 10,000 for the 1st place, AED 7,000 for the 2nd place and AED 5,000 for the 3rd place. IT Application: AED 10,000 for the 1st place, AED 7,000 for the 2nd place, AED 5,000 for the 3rd place and AED 4,000 for the 4th place.
