27 Jan 2023The second official International Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony was held at the Convention Center on the Abu Dhabi Campus at Zayed University on 26 January. The event was held in collaboration with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is designated by the United Nations on 27 January and is an annual day of commemoration. The UN urges every member state to honour the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.
This ceremony at Zayed University highlighted the importance of Holocaust history and the need to confront hate and promote tolerance in the UAE. Bradley D Wine, Council member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum introduced a talk by Ruth Cohen, a Holocaust survivor, who shared her own personal experiences.
Speakers at the event included Her Excellency Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth and President of the Zayed University, Robert Satloff from The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the Dr Michael Allen, Acting Provost at Zayed University.
HE Noura al Kaabi said: “International Holocaust Remembrance Day provides us with an opportunity to pay our respects to the victims of the Holocaust. Education has a crucial role to play in combating extremism and raising awareness of Holocaust history is vital to this endeavour. The UAE is proud of its role as a beacon of tolerance, and we want to thank our partners for joining us to commemorate this important day.”
Bradley D Wine, Council member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum added “The lessons of the Holocaust have never been more relevant. As we witness an alarming rise in antisemitism, racism and extremism, we must recommit ourselves to learning those lessons, and acting on them. That commitment to shaping the future is precisely what we owe to the victims of the past.”
