Program Duration
The Master of Legal and Judicial Studies program is delivered in Arabic over 4 semesters at Zayed University located in Abu Dhabi.
Course Delivery Format
Courses are delivered in 8-week terms. Classes are generally scheduled on weeknights – Mondays through Thursdays – starting at 4:30 PM. Each course meets once each week.

This course aims to enable students to understand the relationship between law as a social phenomenon, which plays a significant role in interacting with other social phenomena within society. Therefore, the course focuses on the relationship between law and society, examining the forms and mechanisms of this interaction and the social issues that arise from the interactions among individuals, groups, and institutions. It also explores the role of law in regulating and framing societal behavior within a framework of rules that govern conduct, thus ensuring peace within society. The course covers topics such as: law as a mechanism for social control, law and social values, law and globalization, and law and customary councils.
This course enables students to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the principles and rules of civil law by reviewing emerging and contemporary issues and conducting a critical analysis of legal texts. The course specifically focuses on studying a civil contract, such as sports sponsorship contracts, or civil liability in its various forms, such as medical liability or telemedicine. It seeks to enhance legal thinking and critical analysis through the examination of judicial applications, legislative developments, and modern trends in the interpretation and application of civil law. As such, this course contributes to students' practical and theoretical knowledge in this field, enhancing their ability to handle contemporary and complex legal issues.
This course aims to enable students to study the general principles of criminal law and the relationship between the Federal Penal Code and other federal and local criminal laws. It focuses on an in-depth study of specific crimes that violate both public and private interests considering the legislative developments taking place in the United Arab Emirates. The course also examines emerging crimes, such as money laundering, terrorism financing, cybercrimes, and crimes related to rumors, as well as other new criminal models that may arise. It seeks to analyze the UAE legislator's approach to these emerging criminal models and interpret the substantive criminal provisions related to them, comparing them with the stance of some Arab or foreign criminal laws.
The student prepares a thesis on one of the topics of the program using legal research methods, and it is written in Arabic, with a summary in English. The thesis is prepared under the supervision of a three-member committee, headed by a faculty member specializing in the subject of the thesis, with an internal faculty member from the department and an external faculty member as additional members. The student selects the topic with the approval of the main supervisor. A seminar is held within the department to refine and approve the thesis. The thesis may not be registered until the student has successfully completed the required courses.
This course aims to enable students to study the most important emerging topics in commercial law, with a particular focus on technology and its role in commercial transactions and various types of commercial companies. It also addresses key legal challenges faced by these companies, such as how to protect their trademarks and secure funding, considering the legislative developments taking place in the United Arab Emirates. The course offers an in-depth and comprehensive study that links the legal framework of the subject matter with its practical or applied aspects, contributing to the students' theoretical and practical knowledge in the field.
This course enables students to understand the most important emerging issues in administrative law and to train them based on practical administrative issues. This will help them practice judiciary work efficiently and achieve comprehensive justice.

This course aims to build a conceptual and terminological foundation in English for students, enabling them to access English-language sources in various branches of law. This will be achieved by studying key clauses in civil, commercial, and administrative contracts, as well as the importance of legal drafting in alternative dispute resolution mechanisms arising from these contracts. The goal is for students to develop the skills needed to draft these contracts and agreements, as well as to represent clients before arbitration bodies, through the examination of in-depth legal studies in English.
This course aims to develop and enhance students' cognitive abilities by providing them with in-depth knowledge of the principles and methods of sound logical thinking. It trains them to apply this thinking when addressing legal issues from various fields, subjecting them to logical analysis that leads to legally sound and logically convincing judicial decisions for all parties involved. Additionally, the course will train students to construct legal arguments based on logical principles and persuade others through effective persuasion techniques and skills. Students will also learn to understand their audience's nature, backgrounds, and methods of influencing and convincing them. This course serves to develop students' higher cognitive abilities, enabling them to achieve a deep understanding of the issues presented to them and to provide logical reasoning for the rulings they achieve.
This course provides students with a broad knowledge of the fundamentals of legal English vocabulary. It teaches students basic legal English terminology on the concept of law across its various branches (public and private law, constitutional law, civil law, criminal law, administrative law, commercial law, and public international law). It presents the general theory of law: sources of law, legal personality, and types of legal rights. This course also provides an overview of universally recognized human rights.

This course enables students to study and analyze International Humanitarian Law topics, as one of the most important branches of Public International Law. It introduces international legal parameters relating to the conduct of war and hostilities: Law of Armed Conflict and focuses on the role and efforts of the UAE in providing humanitarian assistance to affected countries during armed conflicts.
This course identifies the ethical attributes for judges and lawyers and aims to prepare, legal cadres that adhere to ethical foundations in public and private along with, the litigation process. It sheds light on the Islamic rules and values of the judiciary and the legal profession and provides a combination of Islamic experience and contemporary international best practices, regardless of cultural and religious backgrounds.
This course aims to enable students to study the general provisions of the Criminal Procedure Law, including issues related to its application in terms of time, and its enforcement before specialized criminal courts, such as military courts. It also covers criminal procedures during the stages of gathering evidence and preliminary investigation. Additionally, the course explores aspects of the UAE judicial system, as well as the remote litigation system.
The course further examines special criminal procedures, such as the criminal order, reconciliation through mediation and criminal settlement, the electronic monitoring system, and other special criminal procedures that may emerge to address new types of crimes.
This course aims to provide an in-depth study of the Civil Procedure Law, focusing on the modern principles and provisions related to the conduct of civil lawsuits and judicial organization. It covers relevant legal texts concerning procedural topics such as methods of appealing civil judgments, including cessation, appeal, or petition for reconsideration. The course also reviews judicial applications issued by higher courts, with the goal of enhancing and developing students' skills in understanding and correctly applying procedures to civil lawsuits.
This course aims to enable students to comprehend one or more topics related to the Federal Personal Status Law, with a focus on all its elements and aspects. It is studied in a comprehensive and in-depth manner that connects the legal framework of the topic with its practical or applied aspect, based on the realities of the higher courts in the United Arab Emirates. This approach contributes to enhancing the theoretical and practical knowledge of the students in the program.
This course aims to enable the study of the complex relationships between the culture of law and science through analyzing general principles of evidence, traditional evidence such as written evidence in criminal matters, procedures, and conditions for examining the validity and suitability of scientific evidence, and its potential as a legal argument. It focuses on modern evidence types, such as electronic evidence, methods of inference, and their admissibility in courts. Additionally, it covers judicial expertise, its role as independent evidence or in supporting other evidence, procedures for handling it, the parties' roles, and the judge’s discretion in evaluating evidence, determining its weight in legal proceedings, and how to utilize it in various legal claims.
This course introduces legal research and the fundamentals of developing research plans, including the essential elements to consider in terms of structure and topic. It covers legal research tools, how to collect and use sources, the principles of proper citation, and how to utilize online information networks and modern technologies in legal research. The course also explores various legal research methodologies. Additionally, students will prepare a legal research paper using the research principles and methodologies discussed in the course, which will be presented and discussed in front of their peers.
This course enables students to discover the factors and determinants behind the judge's decision-making process. The course also prepares students as judges, prosecutors, and legal professionals, and determines their decision-making methods to achieve justice while practicing judicial work.
This course mainly provides students with a broad knowledge of the economics of justice, ways to improve the efficiency of court administration, develop justice aides, understand functions of judges, lawyers, notaries, and judicial assistants, and the most efficient methods in resolving and settling disputes. This will be achieved by training students on practical models and applications so that upon their graduation, they will be ready to practice judicial work effectively to achieve comprehensive and global justice.
This course aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical experience and skills to understand the different methods and means of settling judicial disputes in non-traditional ways. Furthermore, the course focuses on alternative ways of resolving disputes, terms of recourse, and their role in achieving justice.

This course aims to develop students’ strong legal knowledge and analytical skills in judging lawsuits, building strong arguments, and drawing sound conclusions for all involved parties. Legal reasoning will help students use formal logic and other methods of exposition and give grounds (reasons) for one’s statements to argue persuasively, or to engage in discourse.
This course provides students with knowledge in public finance and tax legislation, through demonstrating the concept of public finance and their governing principles in comparative legal and economic systems, especially public finance sources public revenues, expenditures, and the consequent role of the regulatory institutions, such as Central Bank and its role in regulating the banking system, and the Securities and Commodities Authority, and its role in supervising the capital market, also the Accounting Office and its role in overseeing the finances of executive agencies in the UAE.
Moreover, the course provides in-depth study on the comparative tax systems and Islamic Law, through several axes, the most important being the concept of tax policies and mechanisms, and a study of the tax burden and related problems, with a focus on practical applications of tax legislation, such as value-added tax, income tax, and methods of estimation, along with the methods of resolving disputes.
This course enables students to understand labor disputes and legal settlement procedures at courts. It also aims to establish a correlation between theory and practice in connection with the UAE labor market, by training students on practical and applicable models in the field of settling labor disputes.
This course aims to study and analyze the principles of legal writing in general and judicial writing in particular in civil and criminal cases. It covers the principles and skills required for effective judicial writing, the types of legal documents, and how to write them comprehensively. The course explores the nature of judicial writing, the characteristics of the language used in judicial rulings, and the formal and substantive elements of judicial writing. It also addresses common mistakes in writing legal documents and memoranda, the structure of sentences in the preamble and reasoning of a ruling, and the potential consequences of errors or deficiencies in these areas that may affect the legal validity of the ruling. Practical training is provided on writing various legal documents and memoranda in civil and criminal matters, including identifying and correcting linguistic errors and understanding their legal implications.
This course aims to trains students on the skills required to practice various legal work, through theory and practice, by honing public speaking and oral advocacy skills, critical thinking, investigation, interrogation, and arguments.
Pre-requisite: LAW611 and LAW612
In this research project, the student will produce a master’s-level research paper in Judicial Studies.
This course explores the political and constitutional structure of the United Arab Emirates. Topics include: general theoretical bases of constitutional systems and forms of governments; the structure of the U.A.E. constitution; the formation of the federal system of the U.A.E.; federal and local powers; legislative, executive, and judicial powers; the working of major ministries and federal institutions such as the Federal National Council and the judicial system. Topics covered also include checks and balances between federal and local institutions, human rights in the U.A.E. constitutional system, and the theory of separation of powers. The course also explores the structure of major institutions dealing with monetary and trade relations at the federal and local levels.
