Research Achievements of Winifred Scott

26 Sep 2013

Thanks to her active research portfolio, Dr. Winifred D. Scott can count this summer as a particularly memorable one filled with hard-earned journal acceptances and speaking engagements in exotic locales. An accounting faculty member on the Dubai campus, Dr. Scott has had an outstanding year in 2013 with 5 research articles accepted for publication in blind peer-reviewed journals, 2 research presentations, and 2 academic invited speeches. This success is particularly notable given Simken et al. (2007)[1]’s report that accounting researchers tend to publish an average of 1.08 articles per year and Glover et al. (2006)[2]’s finding that, relative to other business disciplines, accounting researchers tend to publish fewer articles per year. Dr. Scott’s research interests focus on financial reporting quality, corporate governance, and auditing.

Dr. Scott was first invited to join the Education Panel “Women with the Purpose” Global Summit in St. Maarten in the Caribbean in June. The weather was beautiful. The Summit gathered exceptionally talented and influential women from around the world. The keynote speakers included women entrepreneurs, CNN’s and CNBC’s former news anchors, corporate executives, and some who have retired and are currently serving as board members. Participants island hopped and were officially welcomed by The Offices of Tourisms by St. Maarten, St. Martin, Anguilla, and St. Barths. In July, Dr. Scott was invited to speak at the Florida Education Fund’s McKnight Summer Research & Writing Institute where the title of her speech was “A Scholar Abroad: Job Opportunities in Foreign Countries.”  The Florida Education Fund’s McKnight Program provided Dr. Scott with a 5-year scholarship as she pursued her PhD in accounting at Florida State University. This speaking engagement was a great opportunity to give back to the McKnight community as well as the profession.

Although she also spent a week touring Paris, France during the summer, her best memories include receiving three more notices accepting her research papers for publication:

  • "External Auditor's Ethical Dilemma: Perceived Threat to Auditor's Responsibility Posed by the Auditor's Allegiance to Corporate Management" by the Journal of Accounting, Ethics, & Public Policy 14(3): 665-691 with coauthors Gist, W. & Shastri, T. Published August 9, 2013. Available at SSRN: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2308175
  • "SEC Investigations on Fraudulent Reporting and Audit Cost, and Implications for Improving Audit & Financial Reporting Quality – Some Evidence and Suggestions” by the Journal of Forensic Studies in Accounting and Business with coauthors Gist, W. & Shastri, T.
  • "How Audit Fees are Affected by a Client under SEC Investigation" by the International Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Performance Evaluation with coauthor Gist, W.

These acceptances join a presentation in Spring of this year at the American Accounting Association (AAA) International Section Midyear Meeting as well as two journal acceptances in the AAA Accounting and the Public Interest Journal and the Managerial Auditing Journal. Dr. Scott has truly balanced both success and fun this summer. She now has her sights set on future research, such as turning her current works in progress into publications at quality peer-review journals.
