Bio

Prof. Farhi Marir is a full professor at the college of technological Innovation (CTI) at Zayed University (ZU), UAE. He is fellow member of British Computer Society (BCS) for the last twenty-five years. His research interest revolves around data science and artificial intelligence.

He joined Zayed University in 2013, where he was the director of the big data research lab (2013-15) and then acting director of institutional research (2015-17) where he led the AED 2.5 million ZUBID project for the development of a university wide data warehouse and business intelligence dashboards. Prior to joining Zayed University, he was working for twenty years in different UK universities of which he spent thirteen years as the director of the Knowledge Management Research Centre (KMRC) at London Metropolitan University (2000-13).

In ZU, he initiated the first courses in data analytics and data warehousing courses that led to the development of the most successful program of Business Intelligence (BI) and related courses on artificial intelligence and big data at the graduate level. While in the UK, he developed several undergraduate and postgraduate programs in software engineering, advanced databases and data warehousing and data mining.

In research, he supervised thirty PhDs to completion, four of them completed their PhDs while he was in ZU.  He published more than one hundred and twenty articles and conference papers. In ZU, he secured twelve internal funding (RIFs) worth 1.7 million AED and three external funding from National Research Funding (NRF) and medica science department of Mohammed Ben Rached University (MBRU) worth 1.5 million AED. In UK universities, he led thirty-five researchers working on thirty-five UK and EU funded research projects on data science, business intelligence and artificial intelligence for different UK industries (transport, energy, health, education, etc.) worth more than £7 Million.

Before that Prof Farhi Marir worked in Algerian universities for six years. He was leading the department of computer Science in the University of Batna in Algeria where he developed several programs and courses in software engineering, databases systems, and programming languages (1984-88). In 1982 he set up the first university computer center which he managed for 2 years before becoming the head of the computer Science department (1984-86).

Completed PhD Supervision

Supervised thirty PhD to completion, four of them while I was in Zayed University, and most recently:

  1. 2020: Dr Wahid Chergui (2016-20) at Laghrour Abbas in Khenchela in Algeria. He successfully defended his on the 20th of October 2020. His PhD Knowledge Management with the title: “Développement d'un Framework pour l'acquisition et le transfert de connaissance tacite dans le domaine médical." which translate in English as: "Development of a framework for the acquisition and transfer of tacit knowledge in the medical field."

In addition to £7 million of UK & EU research, Professor Marir received more than AED 5 million internal and external research funding, below a selection of the last five years research funding:

  1. 2022-24: AED 271,200 Enhancing Performance of Recommendation Systems through Intelligent Collaborative Filtering Techniques. PI: Prof Farhi Marir, Co-PI: Dr Mohammed Hussain and Dr Moussa Al-Kfairy.
  2. 2022-24: AED 300,000 Developing an Arabic & English Literature-Based Health Discovery Tool for confirming, refuting, and discovering scientifically based natural cure for human recurrent disease. PI: Dr Iqbal Taleb, Co-PI: Dr Farhi Marir and Dr Hussein Fakhry.

  4. 2020-22: 300K AED joint Research Grant between Mohamed bin Rached University of Medicine (MBRU) Department of Medical Science and CTI titled: “Would the subtypes of Type 2 Diabetes segregate into distinct disease entities enabling better Clinical Utility?”
  5. 2019-21: 800K AED joint Research Grant between Mohamed bin Rach University of Medicine (MBRU) Department of Medical Science and CTI titled to work on the use of data analytics for subtyping Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) for better and targeted medication of diabetes patients.
  6. 2019-21: 98,970 AED RIF funded project in collaboration with college of Humanities and social science on a RIF Grant titled: Internet and the emergence of new politics? Assessing the role of new media in new and established democratic landscapes.
