Bio

Mario Guimaraes is a Professor in the College of Information Technology at Zayed University, Dubai. He received his PhD from Pontificia Universidade Catolica, Brazil, in 1995. His research interests include Database, Instructional Software, Database Security, Videogames, and Geographical Information Systems.

Dr. Guimaraes has over ten years of experience in the development of educational software. Two of his most known products are ASA, a program to teach introductory algorithms that has been commercialized throughout Brazil by SENAC and ADbC, a program to teach databases that is freely available at adbc.kennesaw.edu and used by several universities around the world. As a Ph.D. Student of PUC University, Dr. Guimaraes won first place in the 1995 ACM International Student Research Competition – graduate division. Before becoming a faculty, he was a Database Administrator for the Brazilian, a software development (stock analysis) for a Brokerage Company, and a Research Associate and Project Manager for a Brazilian educational company (SENAC). Dr. Guimaraes was a faculty of Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi for five years and a faculty of Kennesaw State University for 10 years. Dr. Guimaraes completed a post-doctorate fellowship in Information Assurance at University of Maryland University College (UMUC). Dr. Guimaraes has close to 100 publications and/or presentations and peer reviewed conferences, proceedings and journals. As a professor, Dr. Guimaraes obtained over one million dollars of external funding as a Principal Investigator. He has obtained multiple National Science Foundation grants as well as Eisenhower, and Ed Rachel Foundation grants.
