We are surrounded by AI-powered software systems that have not only changed our lives and businesses, from how we live to how we seek information and use the sea of data we created, but also radically changed various industries and professions, including healthcare, engineering, and even the way we think and solve complex problems such as the sustainability challenges (climate change, food security, waste, and recycling). Human-centered AI and human-AI interaction are born from the urgent need to design AI-powered software systems and AI-based socio-cyber physical systems that physically, computationally, and cognitively understand humans and how humans interact with AI in a usable, secure, and sustainable way. The HAI Living Lab aims to advance research and education by research human-centric AI-powered systems design while building a tighter fit between how humans think and how actual AI models work. We are creating tools, methods, and practices to leverage a human-centered approach to AI perceived as an augmentation of human capabilities. The following are some of the questions at the heart of our ongoing research niches and projects:
  • How to make AI-powered socio-cyber-physical systems usable, accessible, and accountable so that users can understand how and why AI models work and their usefulness and powerfulness.
  • How to design AI systems that are adaptive to human experiences and adaptable to technology changes so that they can adjust automatically to the user’s needs, preferences, beliefs, and emotions.
  • How to ensure AI systems are accountable and trustable, do not violate our privacy, do not discriminate and harm human users, and respect the user’s privacy, freedom, and rights.
  • How to test the AI systems and their impact on users, society, and the environment using appropriate usability, UX methods, and well-known metrics defined in user experience guidelines and standards.
  • How to build trade-offs between human experiences, intelligence, and AI-powered systems and behavior while bridging the conflicts between human and AI software systems we humans created, which are seen as competitors.
HAI Living Lab provides equipment, hardware and software tools to support various courses and research projects spaning interactive media, computer graphics, games and gamification, immersive and metaverse design, user experience design thinking, usability testing and measures, as well as the central focus of the HCI lab living, a unique place for AI-powered software and human-AI interaction design and research.
