Facilities and Resources

Space and Facilities

Proper lab space at Zayed University will be allocated for this lab and to house the needed computing services. Eight computers equipped with IDL/ENVI, the complete suite of ESRI’s Arc GIS software, ERDAS Imagine, and Cadence, poster printing for the lab- affiliated students, faculty, and staff, and access to several computing labs maintained by the ZU IT department.

Resourcing

The budget for the lab and its first set of projects is shown in the table below. The key element of this proposal is that the lab revolves around existing faculty expertise, administrative capabilities and academic focus.  It is thus representing organic growth of UAE Space Agency own mission.

Samples of the lab equipment’s:

  • A Bruker Vertex 70 VNIR and TIR spectrophotometer with Optosol external integrating sphere

  • ASD spectrometers, Model Fieldspec Pro, plus accessories

  • ASD spectrometers, Model Fieldspec 3, plus accessories and ASD integrating Sphere

  • A MIDAC thermal range FTIR fieldspectrometer with fore optics and liquid N cooled MCT detector

  • Four chlorophyll meters, Spad 502 and Licor LAI200 leave area index meters

  • A TRAC for measuring canopy gap size distribution and gap fraction

  • A GER 3700 spectrometer with interchangeable optics and a fiber probe

  • A Pima II field portable spectrometer

  • A NEC thermo tracer TH9100 series, a non-contact infrared radiometric camera

  • A Tetracam Agricultural Camera, a near infrared digital stills camera

  • A Li-Cor Li-1400 data logger with several Spherical Quantum Sensors

The money will be spent on purchasing sensors, materials, and funding specialized technicians. The laboratory synthesis of precise samples especially those that depicts the martian samples requires moderate amounts of relatively low-cost supplies on a continuous basis. Examples are found in the budget under materials and supplies, where they constitute the major portion. Dissemination of results a basic method of dissemination of research results will be presentations at professional meetings and conferences, and through interactive websites. Three professionals might use these funds upon making presentations. An additional method of dissemination of research results will be publications in refereed journals. A small amount is requested for such publication costs. Another method of dissemination of research results is the production of CD with proper computer application for data retrieval.

Supplies (one year): The following items are necessary to design the pilot experimental design to test the spectral responses of salt and salt affected soils.

Reusable Petri Dishes, Kimax Brand (3 case)/ Fisher Brand Heavy Glass Desiccators/ Ten Volumetric Glass Kimax Brand with Closed Bottom Linear High-Dens/ Polyethylene Stopper/ Fifteen Science Ware Holdfast Polypropylene Graduated Cylinders/ Nalgene Polypropylene Mason Jar Bottles, 2000 ml (3 pack)/ Sieves, five different mesh sieves; standard stainless-steel mesh sieves/ Calcium Carbonate Powder/ Calcium Sulfate/ Calcium Chloride/ Sodium Bicarbonate/ Superfrost slides.

Travel (One Person), dissemination of results, discussed above, contains justification for travel to professional meetings. Travel on a more local basis will be important in the applications of saline soil spectral studies to real, natural, situations. The middle reach of the Rio Grande, very near to EI Paso, has been selected as the major target for testing and application of the new techniques. These essential local travels need from a small part of the budget.

Meetings: attend the Annual American Society for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing conference in Washington, DC (ASPRS Annual Conference or other) in order to present the results of the proposed study
