Bio

Dr. Smail joined Zayed University as an Associate Professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department in the College of Natural and Health Sciences. Prior to coming to ZU, she worked for the New York Institute of Technology and The American University or Iraq, Sulaimani.  She received her B.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Marne-La-Vallée University, France. Dr. Smail research interests include Bayesian networks and machine learning, in particular Bayesian inference and learning in graphical models. Dr. Smail also focuses on using applications of Bayesian Networks in education  and other fields.

Research and Professional Activities

My research interests include graphical models and Bayesian Networks. I am not only interested in Bayesian inference and learning in graphical models, but also using Bayesian netwiorks in different domains involving decision taking. My recent research focuses on topics related to the UAE such as health and education using both Statistics and Bayesian Networks.

CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT:

2019 [2 years grant]: Smail, L., Jassim, G., Tirmazy, S., & Awad, M. Quality of life of Emirati Women with Breast Cancer. The aim of this study is to contribute to the evaluation and understanding of the current situation of quality of life of breast cancer survivors in the UAE. It will identify the relationship between their quality of life, their sociodemographic characteristics and religious influences that differ in the UAE from other Arabic countries which could have different findings from those elsewhere. The results will have a great impact on women’s quality of life as well as healthcare policies regarding their wellbeing.
