College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Message from the Acting Dean

I would like to welcome you to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Zayed University.  The College is comprised of three Departments—the Department of Social Sciences, the Department of Arabic Language, and the Department of Islamic World Studies.  In addition to contributing the university’s general education program and spearheading the integration of Arabic across the curriculum, the College offers two undergraduate programs in International Studies and Emirati Studies, three minors (Literature; GCC/Middle East Studies; and Arabic for Media), and three graduate programs including an MA in Diplomacy and International Affairs, an MA in Judicial Studies and an Executive Masters in Public Administration.  CHSS prides itself on fostering the skills—including critical thinking, communication, research, and global awareness-- that empower graduates to succeed as future leaders, professionals and citizens.

At the heart of its mission, the college promotes the study of history, politics, law, culture and society at the national, regional and international levels.  CHSS is of the firm belief that in order to contribute to the economic and social development of the UAE, graduates must understand the complex issues confronting not only the nation, but the region and the world around them. A broader, more holistic perspective allows students to engage positively with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and encourages flexibility and innovative thinking in the workplace and in daily life.  To achieve this mission, faculty employ teaching methodologies in the classroom that encourage active learning, critical analysis of texts, and hands-on experience in the field—be it as interns, junior excavators in an archaeology field school, or presenters at an academic conference or event.  In fact, as part of their educational experience, CHSS students engage in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities including humanitarian work, study abroad experiences, participation in international, regional and national conferences and events, and student-faculty research collaboration.
CHSS graduates have demonstrated their success over the years through various achievements and awards.  As an example, they have obtained first rank in the Young Entrepreneurship competition; been accepted in The Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program; participated in the Al Maktoum College Training Program in Scotland; completed the Zayed Undergraduate Scholars Research Program; and received Fulbright Scholarship awards.

Equipped with a unique set of skills and an inquisitive mindset, our graduates go on to pursue careers in such organizations as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Executive Council, the Prime Minister’s Office, Emirates Airlines, Abu Dhabi Investment Council, Jumeira Group Hotels, Dubai Economic Development Authority, Community Development Authority Dubai, Federal Demographic Council, Mubadala, Federal Authority For Nuclear Regulation, Ministry of Interior-Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority, Etihad Airlines, and NYU Abu Dhabi.  College graduates with an interest in academia or aiming to achieve greater expertise in a particular field have continued their graduate studies at such universities as Oxford University, London School of Economics, Georgetown University, University of Wollongong, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, the American University of Sharjah, British University of Dubai and University of Edinburgh.
