Introduction

Jeremy Smith taught courses in Russian history at the University of Birmingham in the UK for 11 years, and at the University of Eastern Finland for 10 years before being appointed Professor of Russian History at Zayed University. His research has focused on non-Russian nationalities in and after the Soviet Union, and he has published numerous articles and three books on this theme, including Red Nations: the Nationalities Experience in and after the USSR (Cambridge University Press, 2013). He is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Council for Central and East European Studies and an editorial board member for Brill’s monograph series International Comparative Social Studies.

Roles and Responsibilities

Before coming to Zayed University, I was Director of the VERA Centre for Russian and Border Studies at the University of Eastern Finland.

At Birmingham University in the UK, I held various positions of responsibility, including for doctoral studies in the College of Government and Society.

Qualifications

PhD in Russian History from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London, 1996

MA in Central and East European History, also from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London, 1990

BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, 1987.
