The importance of the humanities and social sciences in today’s rapidly changing world 

Here are some examples of how the humanities and social sciences help solve problems concerning our being human in the world today:

  • The transformations necessary for a sustainable future begin with the understanding of human societie
  • The study of relationships and institutions within human societies past and present, help explain small-scale phenomena such as interactions between families and communities but also macroscale patterns of cooperation, competition and development.
  • Understanding of the society is vital to support research in other scientific fields and to enhance the consciousness of the local community about innovative solutions for the future.
  • Global challenges and opportunities that lie ahead require such innovative approaches: the emergence of AI, global warming, the mass consumption of social media to name a few, raise many burning questions for the societies around the world.

Our graduates are equipped with a sound knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods to research the patterns of social behavior that open the possibility for establishing future strategies and models. In that way, our programs also support the transition to a knowledge-based economy.

What you study

As a foundation for the MA degrees, our BA program emphasizes the following disciplines:

       

1.  Political science: beginning with the foundations of political science, our students gain in-depth knowledge of IR theories, foreign policy, comparative governments, international organizations and political economy to name a few 

2.  History: our graduates are familiar with major events in world history but also study in detail history of the Middle East and the UAE 

3.  Anthropology: our students learn the foundations of cultural studies as well as focus on the topics of anthropology of the Middle East, popular cultures, and sound knowledge of the different world regions 

4.  Sociology: our graduates discover the foundations of sociology, and its most important debates and applications in the development of critical thinking, along with other specialized courses such as comparative intellectual traditions
