The Swahili Coast was closely connected with the Arabian Gulf through the seasonal monsoon. This lecture will examine the links between the two regions during the later medieval and early modern period drawing on the latest archaeological evidence. It forms the background to a collaborative research project between the University of Bristol and Zayed University focusing on the archaeology of Zanzibar and Pemba generously funded by a RIF Grant.
3 - Short bio:
Mark Horton is a maritime and historical archaeologist, television presenter and writer. His doctorate was awarded by the University of Cambridge and he is now Professor in Archaeology at the University of Bristol. He has conducted excavations in Zanzibar, Egypt, the Caribbean, North America, Central America and France, as well as sites in Britain. His chief publications are on the Swahili site of Shanga, Kenya between 1980 and 1986, and more recently sites on the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. He has a strong interest in maritime archaeology and is the Programme Director of the MA Maritime Archaeology and History at Bristol University. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London on 7 May 1992.
