Biography

Yulia S. Medvedeva is an Assistant Professor in the College of Communication and Media Sciences at Zayed University in Dubai.

Medvedeva earned her doctoral degree at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in the United States in 2017. Between 2006 and 2008, she studied magazine editing for her master’s at Mizzou on a Fulbright scholarship.  

As a scholar, Medvedeva studies how well people learn from different kinds of media. Her research appeared in Science Communication, Journal of Magazine & New Media Research, and International Communication Research Journal. Her work on the effects of modality, co-authored with Dr. Glenn Leshner, won Top Theory Paper Award from the Communication Theory and Methodology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2018.

Medvedeva specializes in teaching writing for public relations. Her chapter on working in journalism and PR abroad, co-authored with Dr. Beverly Horvit, appeared in the second edition of “Cross-Cultural Journalism and Strategic Communication” by Routledge in 2020. A class activity she designed received Top GIFTS Award from the Division of Instructional and Developmental Communication of the International Communication Association in 2017.

She chairs the Student Media Editorial Board that oversees ZajelZU.ae.

Medvedeva’s support for Students of Determination at ZU was recognized in 2020 and 2021. She is also a recipient of the 2017 Rewards and Incentives Program.

Before joining academia, Medvedeva served as a spokesperson for a local brunch of the Russian Union of Youth and edited a PR magazine for a chain of health and beauty salons in Kostroma, Russia.
