Lena Jayyusi, Ph.D., has taught at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, the University of Connecticut at Storrs and Cedar Crest College in Pennsylvania, where she was Chair of the Department of Communication Studies.
An Annenberg Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, an SSRC Fellow and a Ford Foundation Individual Research grant recipient, she has been a visiting researcher as well as Visiting Professor at the Ecole Haute D’Etudes de Science Sociale in Paris. She served as Senior TOKTEN consultant on media and culture for the United Nations Development Program in Jerusalem, as Director of Academic Programs at al-Quds University in Jerusalem, and as Director of the Oral History Program at The Palestinian Diaspora and Refugee Center, in Ramallah, Palestine.
Her publications are interdisciplinary, addressing topics in media and cultural studies, film and visuality, memory and narrative, oral history, everyday communication and reasoning, national identity and citizenship, and international law. Her book, Categorization and the Moral Order, widely cited in its field, was published in French in 2010, and re-issued as a Routledge Revival in 2014. She is editor of a 700 page Reader in Media and Democracy published in Arabic in March 2013. She also edited Jerusalem Interrupted: Modernity and Colonial Transformation 1917-the Present which was published in 2015, and won a Palestine Book Award for that year (MEMO-UK), She is co-editor of Media and Political Contestation in the Contemporary Arab World: a Decade of Change, (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2016). Member of the international editorial boards of several journals, including Critical Arts: A Journal of North-South Media and Cultural Studies, she serves as regional editor for the Middle East for Global Media and Communication, and has been, for over a decade, a non-resident Senior Research Fellow at Muwatin: The Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy, in Ramallah. Dr. Jayyusi has B.A. in Sociology from Durham University, UK, M. Sc., and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Manchester, UK, and M.A. in Film Studies from the University of Boston.
