Bio
Brendan Galbraith is an Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship. He previously held management positions in the United States and Ireland and was a faculty member at Ulster University for over a decade prior to arriving in the UAE. Dr Galbraith is an editorial board member at Technology Analysis and Strategic Management Journal, IEEE Transactions Engineering Management and International Journal of Entrepreneurship.
He was a visiting scholar at the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at University of California, Berkeley and he undertook faculty training on the Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship. He initiated ZU’s membership and served as the lead contact for Harvard Business School’s Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) Affiliate Network and received faculty training on MOC and Creating Shared Value curriculum as well as the Harvard Case Study Method. He has served as a visiting professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University and as a guest lecturer at Portland State University. He served as VP (TACs and Education) at IEEE Technology Engineering Management Society and is a two-term board member.
His research has appeared in Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Technovation, R&D Management, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Production Planning and Control, Technology Analysis and Strategic Management, Total Quality Management and Business Excellence and the International Journal of Production Research. He has co-authored and co-edited two books in Social Innovation and Innovation Intermediaries and is a frequent plenary speaker at conferences and industry events. Dr Galbraith has led the development and exploitation of several prestigious innovation and research projects valued in excess of £5 million funded by the European Commission and ESRC and he has one software invention disclosure. His research has been presented in the European Parliament, European Commission, Committee de Regions, Northern Ireland Parliament and featured on BBC News. He has been the general chair of several international conferences: IEEE International Technology Management Conference, European Conference Innovation and Entrepreneurship and co-chair of European Conference for Knowledge Management and IEEE Global Conference on AI and IoT. He received the Belfast Ambassador Award by Belfast City Council and Visit Belfast and was an elected Board member of the European Network of Living Labs.
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (UK-wide research quality assessment) Dr Galbraith was the lead author of the impact case study ‘high-tech innovation adoption’ that was ranked as 4-star ‘world leading’. This ranking is the equivalent of six 4-star ABS journal publications and was instrumental in the Ulster University Business School securing the 7th ranking in the UK Business Schools for Research Impact. This impact case study was singled out as “one of the very best examples of impact in business schools in the UK” in an ABS Impact Case Studies book (2015). He has supervised and examined numerous PhD students in the UK, Ireland and Germany and served as an external examiner of undergraduate and postgraduate programs for universities in the UK and Ireland. He has previously served on a wide range of department and university-level administrative roles and strategic steering committees. He has been an external consultant to a range of software start-ups, manufacturing firms and served as a strategy consultant to universities in the UAE. He has been nominated for a range of teaching awards, research impact awards and service awards throughout his tenure in academia and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. At ZU, he has served as the Chair of the Research Committee and is currently the Chair of Postgraduate Studies.
