Bio

Most of Damien’s academic research is related to the way young people use consumption to communicate symbolically. His PhD thesis examined symbolic consumption within a youth subculture and its relationship with one’s identity. Since joining ZU, Damien has explored a number of important local issues such as materialism in the UAE, luxurious Emirati weddings, and identity expression through fashion consumption amongst Emiratis. His work has been published in a number of international journals including Psychology and Marketing, International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management, International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Emerging Markets, Australasian Marketing Journal and Qualitative Market Research. Damien is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Young Consumers journal. He has also received a number of accolades including ZU’s Provost Research Award, University of Adelaide scholarship and an ANZMAC Monash Doctoral Colloquium Prize for the best PhD proposal.

Damien’s primary teaching responsibilities include consumer behavior and digital marketing. In consumer behavior, he encourages students to observe their own consumption behavior and everyday marketing activities as a way to grasp the significance of the theoretical concepts. Within this class he utilizes social media, discussion boards and other online tools to compliment face-to-face education. All students who take digital marketing with Damien obtain a digital marketing certification from Google. In addition, they are required to demonstrate their skills in SEO, content creation, social media, email marketing, online advertising and analytics for the UAE review site that Damien created. Damien’s courses are popular at both the undergraduate and master level and are consistently rated highly for their quality, depth of the content covered, and the various and interactive modes of delivery.
