Thorsten Lomker
Bio
Dr. Lomker is an architect and computer scientist with a keen interest in the meaningful integration of digital processes into the design disciplines. He started his academic career at the Bauhaus-University, where his research dealt with the optimization of designs through the use of numerical methods adopted from Operations Research. He has been a contributor to many national and international research projects and continuously acts as a reviewer for major international conferences, publishers, government bodies, and universities that emphasize the integration of computational design techniques. Dr. Lomker holds an MArch from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim, Germany, an M.Sc. from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Scotland, and a Ph.D. from Bauhaus-University Weimar, Germany.
Dr. Lomker is a Full Professor and the former Assistant Dean Research and Graduate Studies at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University, where he teaches in a variety of different programs and researches methods that can further aid and inform the digital design process. He is the initiator of the CACE Fab Lab, the Principal Investigator of the Research Cluster "21st Century Fabrication and Robotics", as well as the Director of the “Research Center for Digital Fabrication”.
In 2017 Zayed University was among five UAE Institutions to receive a €100.000.000 software grant, seeking to advance digital skills in the country to support its economic growth. Following an open call for submissions of compelling ideas that illustrated how universities would use Siemens Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, the Ministry of Education selected Dr. Lomker’s proposal to receive the prestigious grant.
Dr. Lomker received an “Innovation Manager Award” in 2016, as well as the Zayed University “Creative Employee Award” for the year 2016-2017. He was awarded the “Exceptional Employee Award” for the Year 2017-2018. In 2018 he was nominated for the prestigious “Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Award, Prime Minister Medal for the Innovative Employee”.
