Bio
Meriem McKenzie is an Assistant Professor in Interior Design at the Abu Dhabi campus of Zayed University, United Arab Emirates. She joined the College of Arts and Creative Enterprise in Spring 2014, and brings a wealth of relevant industry experience to the teaching program.
Originally from France, Meriem is a registered UK chartered architect with an extensive career working as a lead architect on Higher Education and Healthcare projects. Her technical focus includes the design of specialized research facilities and healthcare environments, which comprises projects for Great Ormond Street Hospital (London, UK) and Cambridge University (UK). In 2007, she set up her own architectural practice, MM Architects Cambridge (UK), an architectural company that specialized in healthcare and high-end residential projects.
Meriem is registered with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and UK Architects Registration Board (ARB). She holds a Master in Architecture from the “Ecole d’Architecture de Haute Normandie” in France, and a Teaching Diploma from Cambridge Regional College in Cambridge, UK.
In her teaching practice, she has a particular interest for modeling, drawing, creative thinking processes and using freehand drawings as the conceptual basis for drafting and developing design ideas.
Her research interests are in the field of design and architecture education, with a focus on pedagogical approaches to the design studio and the apprenticeship model. Other interests include contemporary curriculum practices and areas pertaining to localisation, internationalisation and globalisation.
