Bio
Dr. Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou is an Associate Professor of Art at Zayed University, UAE, as well as a contemporary visual artist, writer, and curator. Before joining Zayed University in 2018, he taught for five years at the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, where he also served as the coordinator of the Fine Arts program. His teaching focuses on analog and digital photography, expanded photography, video and film, senior visual arts studio, installation, and exhibition practices.
Ioannis’s expanded photographic work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries and institutions across the UAE, Europe, the US, Australia, China, and Japan. His notable exhibitions include the Athens Photo Festival, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, the Venice Biennale, the Florence Biennale, the Exposure Festival in Sharjah, the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Korea, and the Eyes on Main Street Festival in the US. His work is part of both private and public collections.
Dr. Ioannis’s creative and theoretical research explores the relationship between ideated, geographic, and virtual spaces, as well as the connections between objects, artists, media, viewers, and society. He writes on visual arts, photography, and film, contributing regularly to scholarly journals and publications such as Taylor and Francis: The Journal of Visual Practice Research, Photography & Culture, CGRNet's On the Image, and the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature.
In his curatorial work, Dr. Ioannis aims to empower emerging artists, and he has curated numerous exhibitions, primarily in the UAE. He currently serves as the chair of the research committee at CACE/Zayed University, while continuing to teach, exhibit, write, curate, and present his work at conferences and exhibitions around the world.

Research and Professional Activities
Ioannis is a contributor to scholarly research journals and publications such as CGR Net's On the Image, Taylor and Francis Journal of Visual Art Practice, and the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature. He is the author of numerous creative based series of artworks and author of the book: A Photograph Without Space And Time. Functions, Values And Messages of The“Generated-Through Software Photograph”, GRIN Verlag, 2013. His latest publications include “Contemporaneity and views from Expatria: past and current landscape practices", "Home – No Home: Expatriation, Social Integration and Remote Viewing of Place. An Expanded Photography Approach", and The Post Readymade Photographed Object". In terms of creative based research, Dr Ioannis has shown his work at Athens Photo Festival, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, the Venice Biennale, the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Florence Biennale, the Biennale Arte Dolomiti in Italy, the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Korea, and the Eyes on Main Street Festival in the USA.
