Basem Mohamed - Course Coordinator - Interior Design

PhD in Architecture, McGill University.

Bio

Basem is designer, researcher, and educator with a diverse background. He holds a Doctoral degree from McGill University’s School of Architecture, where he developed a pioneering digital platform aimed at enabling the mass customization of prefabricated housing systems. His academic work centers on advancing the intersection of design processes, information technology, and computational methods to rethink the future of housing. Through his research, Basem has collaborated with various stakeholders to bring new perspectives to the field of prefab housing. He has been recognized with several prestigious research awards, facilitating partnerships with leading prefabrication companies in Quebec to implement his findings. Additionally, his expertise has inspired the housing sector in Abu Dhabi, where he worked alongside local authorities to establish a new housing protocol tailored to Emirati needs. His research has been disseminated across a range of international conferences and journals, including ARCC, MCPC, and Open House International.

Throughout his career, Basem has established active collaborations with architectural firms in Egypt, Canada, and the UAE. His work reflects a deep commitment to bridging academic research with real-world applications, blending sensible design solutions with practical housing challenges. With over 15 years of experience, Basem has been a key player in some built projects in Egypt, and Canada, both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.

In his teaching role, Basem has been always keen on nurturing the next generation of designers and architects through his work at institutions such as AAST Alexandria, McGill University, Abu Dhabi University, and currently as an Associate Professor at Zayed University’s College of Arts and Creative Enterprises (CACE). He is deeply committed to education, focusing on design studios, furniture design, and digital modeling and representation courses. His students have won several prestigious awards including the Christo Jeanne Claude in 2018, and Cityscape 2019. His approach to teaching emphasizes creativity, technical skills, and critical thinking, preparing students to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of architectural design.
