Tina Sleiman

Bio

Tina Sleiman is a certified green designer, an Associate Professor of graphic design and Assistant Chair of Design at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, and a mother of three children. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design with distinction from the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts, Lebanon, and an MS in Design from Arizona State University, USA. She also recently obtained recognition from the Higher Education Academy in the UK as Senior Fellow.

 

An educator and researcher since 2007, Tina spoke at conferences in Canada, India, Lebanon, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the UAE on sustainability, design responsibility, and visual culture, and wrote articles published in Wiley's International Journal of Art and Design Education, and John Hopkins University Press’ Bookbird Journal of International Children's Literature. She has taught fifteen different design courses, several of which she developed entirely; co-curated a typographic show featuring 80 students; worked at Arizona State University as a graphic designer and faculty associate; and held designer and team leader positions at AGA-ADK and DW Green creative studios.

 

Over the past five years, she has been actively researching about responsible production and consumption, embedding aspects of sustainable design in her classes, presenting research outcomes at the third UAE Public Policy Forum and the 2019 Dubai Design Week, as well as delivering community talks and workshops. Tina is passionate about preserving nature and is constantly looking for ways to live and promote the zero-waste lifestyle. She is currently serving on the scientific committee for the 12th World Environmental Education Congress.

Teaching Areas

Graphic Design

Specialist teaching areas include: layout and publication design, visual identity and icon design, branding, typography, packaging design, regenerative ‘green’ graphic design, systems thinking, design research and history, as well as professional practices and ethics in design.

Research and Professional Activities

Tina’s research areas include: Regenerative graphic design, Publication design and illustration in children’s literature, Expressive typography, as well as Visual popular culture, memory and identity.
