Bio

Dr. Ioannis Galanopoulos-Papavasileiou is an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at Zayed University, UAE. Ioannis is an interdisciplinary contemporary visual artist. He has participated in numerous solo and group art exhibitions in UAE, Europe, the USA, Australia, China and Japan. His work has been acquired by private and public collections, such as the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan) and private collectors worldwide. His photo based creative portfolios examine the relationship between ideated, geographic and virtual place, as well the connections between objects, artists, media, viewers and society.

Ioannis holds a BFA in Photography and Multimedia arts, a Master of Arts degree in Humanities and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Studies. His Ph.D. concerns place photography and expatriation and was awarded by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. Prior to joining ZU, he taught for 6 years at the United Arab Emirates University in al Ain and served as the Coordinator of UAEU’s Fine Arts Program.

His teaching and creative based interests are in a variety of media, such as photography, graphic design, digital post-production, printing, new media, video and film, animation, visual studies, humanities and modern and contemporary aesthetics.

Research and Professional Activities

Ioannis is a contributor to scholarly research journals and publications such as CGR Net's On the Image, Taylor and Francis Journal of Visual Art Practice, and the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature. He is the author of numerous creative based series of artworks and author of the book: A Photograph Without Space And Time. Functions, Values And Messages of The“Generated-Through Software Photograph”, GRIN Verlag, 2013. His latest publications include “Contemporaneity and views from Expatria: past and current landscape practices", "Home – No Home: Expatriation, Social Integration and Remote Viewing of Place. An Expanded Photography Approach", and The Post Readymade Photographed Object". In terms of creative based research, Dr Ioannis has shown his work at Athens Photo Festival, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, the Venice Biennale, the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Florence Biennale, the Biennale Arte Dolomiti in Italy, the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Korea, and the Eyes on Main Street Festival in the USA.
