Bio
Adina Hempel is a registered architect, urban researcher and Associate Professor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at the Zayed University in Dubai, UAE. Her research investigates the relationship of interior spaces, city planning and cross-cultural influences in emerging urban centers. She is leading a research cluster entitled ‘Pattern in the MENA region’ at Zayed University, exploring the notion of visual and organizational patterns in material culture, community building and cultural representation in/from the Middle East. Adina has conducted extensive research on the architectural and urban history of the UAE and was appointed Head of Research for the curatorial team of the National Pavilion of the UAE at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in La Biennale di Venezia. Most recently she served as Head of Research for the Shindagha Historic District Wave 1 pavilions at GSM Project, Dubai.
Adina Hempel was a co-founder of the interdisciplinary not for profit design organization tasmena, fostering sustainable urban development in the UAE and studying the socio-cultural impact of trade on neighborhood development in Dubai. Her work contributed to various exhibitions and publications such as the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2009, Venice Architecture Biennale 2016 and 2018. She has lectured at institutions such as the Architectural Association London, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kassel University and Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar.
Adina Hempel received a Dipl.-Ing. of Architecture (Master in Architecture) from the Technical University of Dresden in Germany, studied at Columbia University New York and New York Film Academy.
