The College of Arts and Creative Enterprises (CACE) at Zayed University, presents:

Place + Uncanny

by guest artist Shane Hulbert, at the CACE promenade gallery on the Abu Dhabi Campus. The exhibition will be displayed from 15 February – to 29 February 2024. The artist will also give an in-person lecture at the gallery on 22 February at 11:00.

Shane Hulbert was born in Sydney, Australia in 1971 and now lives in the mountains on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia. For the last 20 years he has been working as an academic at RMIT University in Australia and Hong Kong, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Photography.  His photographic work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Australia, China, South Korea, Serbia, the UK and the US.

Hulbert is primarily a photographer – his work explores the relationship between landscape, place and culture, with a focus on the ways in which Australia’s national identity and contested history is evident within the constructed sites and locations that include representations of Australia.  As a photographer he actively engages with contemporary photographic technologies to support his image making, often repurposing devices or disrupting traditional means of photography to incorporate complex digital practices into his work.

Place + Uncanny is small retrospective of 22 photographs shot over the past 2 decades in various locations throughout Australia and internationally. Through a series of expeditions and travels, the work in the show explores a range of themes related to how place and location help to define a sense of cultural identity and belonging. Of particular interest are the historical and contemporary cultural markers that aid in identifying and shaping our world. The photographic and video work uses a combination of site interpretation, iconography and humour to consider ways in which various locations encapsulate the experience of the modern world.
