Environmental Health and Safety

Introduction

Environment, Health and Safety are important for the campus operation, staff and students. Health and safety is a vital part of everyone’s job and studies. Failures in health and safety standards may cause injury, ill health or business closure.

Therefore, Zayed University has established an Environmental, Health and Safety Management System(EHSMS), for better satisfaction of the needs of its staff/ faculty/ students to progress towards excellence in Environment, Health, and Safety outcomes.

Environment, Health, and Safety Management System is a unique management system followed by University Campuses to ensure EHS practices exercised by Zayed University meet the requirements of UAE Federal Law, Dubai Municipality EHS, Abu Dhabi Public Health Center OSHAD requirements and any other applicable Legal Regulatory Requirement.

Environmental, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS)

In December 2016, Zayed University certified the Environmental, Health and Safety Management System(EHSMS) with the globally renowned International Management System Standards ISO 14001:2004 & and OHSAS 18001:2007 (ISO: International Organization for Standardization & OHSAS). Further, it is recertified to the newer version standard ISO14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.

The certifications bestowed by internationally recognized accrediting bodies validate the commitment of Zayed University to the pursuit of high levels of standards in Environment, Health and Safety practices.

The Zayed University’s EMS (Environmental Management System) and OHSMS (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) standards are complying with specific international best practices which are recognized worldwide to mitigate and effectively manage impacts on the environment, as well as to provide a safer and healthier work & study environment by mitigating various risks at Zayed University Premises.

ZU’s EHSMS system facilitates a constant cycle of planning, implementation, review and corrective/ preventive actions to attain pre-established EHS targets and objectives which are intended to safeguard the wellbeing of students, staff, faculty and the Environment

OSHAD:

“Being a Federal Educational Entity, OSHAD (Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health System) has been nominated as Sector Regulatory Authority (in Occupational Health and safety matters) for Zayed University in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Therefore, Zayed University’s Occupations Health and Safety Management have been approved and certified by Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health System Framework (OSHAD – SF) meeting all relevant Mandatory Elements, Mechanisms, Code of Practices and Standard.”

Policies and Procedures

Zayed University’s established Policies and Procedures ensure a consistent approach to managing the EHS impacts, risk, and hazards through the comprehensive systems in conformance with local and international standards.

The active involvement and commitment of top management on EHS matters and continuous support on establishing rigid EHS Policy and Procedures laid a strong foundation for the Environment Health and Safety Management system.

The Scope of EHSMS

The scope of the Zayed University’s Health, Safety and Environmental System includes:

Provision of safe workplace, safe equipment, and adequate welfare facilities
Compliance with all legal and Federal requirements
Provision for the establishment of a specific methodology for EHS Risk Management
Provision of delegation to concerned individuals for addressing EHS concerns
Provision of an essential permit to work guidelines
Provision of effective and systematic incident investigation and reporting mechanisms
Appropriate waste handling and waste reduction/ recycling initiatives complying with Local Government Regulations
Provision of energy and natural resource saving / protection initiatives
Provision of safe environmental practices
Provision of emergency management at Zayed University

Communication and Consultation Platforms

Several electronic and orthodox communication platforms were established for the campus community for better interaction and involvement in Environment Health and Safety Matters. Apart from the conventional notice boards and communication methodology, an EHS Mobile application along with several automated platforms are already available for the whole campus community for effective communication, reporting, emergency management, alerting and training purposes. EHS campaigns and events are conducted on campus to educate the community regarding the importance of Environment, Health and safety matters.
