AUD / TUD Workshop + Presentation: RE_ORIENT- Active Vision in Community Spaces of Dubai, from 30 Oct -7 Nov
Location: American University in Dubai (Building A-107)
This Second International AUD/TUD Intermedia Technology Workshop, organized by the Department of Visual Communication at the American University in Dubai (AUD) with colleagues from the Media Design Department at the Technical University Dresden (TUD), will focus on the acquisition and processing of data deriving from the behaviour of highly heterogeneous, dynamic cultural systems / crowds. The workshop will also explore how to transform this data into significant visual expressions relevant for navigation and orientation. Visual and artistic perception will round off the program. During this intensive one-week workshop directed by AUD and TUD faculty, a select group of AUD students working with their peers from TUD and from Zayed University will use the latest technology to create projects addressing the themes of active vision and community spaces. The workshop will include background presentations by professors from both AUD and AUD on Nov. 4th. Results, findings and digital artwork will be presented to the public on the final day of the workshop on Nov 7th.

Student Dialogues 02: Evolution of Storytelling
Tuesday Nov 4 at 3-4pm
Location: Zayed University Dubai Blue Auditorium
The power of storytelling has developed over the years and has become one of the most powerful tools to creation. Storytelling in the digital era allows us to understand the past and present. As well as, project what the next creative force will build. This creative force is the new generation. Storytelling began in the simplest form of folk tales and poetry as entertainment. It has evolved into what it is today which is art. One of the most important aspects is that storytelling is imbedded within the region’s culture, in the most well known form of Arabic spoken poetry. Technology has allowed the region to further develop its tools to advance its means of storytelling and most importantly to reach as many people as possible. Some say, the leaps in technology might have created a gap between older and newer generations, resulting in a lack of information being transferred.
Moderator: Rawda Buhannad (Digital Production and Storytelling Major at American University in Dubai)
Speakers:
Janet Echelman (Keynote TBA)
Noura AlNoman ( Emirati Writer)
Lina Younus (The Animation Chamber)

Best practices of other city developments shall be reviewed and possibilities to innovate based on the artist method of exploration and innovation applied to city development. Connecting Cultures: Research Collaboration and Shared Digital Archives
Education often exists disconnected from industry, when both would greatly benefit from each other and possibly fuel innovative and sustainable development of human capital. Research is part of most commercial processes. How can research be servicing and connecting academia and industry, while preserving the neutral integrity within a university system? How can research innovate education and help to gain capital for future ventures within industry and academia? Research begins with documentation and cultural understanding. In the age of technology and heritage preservation, archiving and documentation store knowledge and allow learning for future development. How can we encourage a shared approach to research as a collaboration platform between academia and industry?
