Communication Guru Marshall McLuhan told a marvelous story.

A cat chased a mouse.
The mouse dashed into a hole in the wall.
The cat lingered over the hole.
Waiting.
Meowing forlornly.
The mouse emerged only after the cat left.
Day after day this cat and mouse game went on.
One day, having escaped yet again into its hole, the mouse heard, “Bow wow.  Bow wow.”
Hmm.  A new sound.
The mouse stuck out its head.
In one motion, the cat swept up the mouse and popped the poor creature into its mouth.
Contented, the cat muttered, “It pays to know a second language.”
