Research Ethics Committee

Established at the start of the 2009/10 academic year, the REC is responsible for reviewing all research proposals and protocols to ensure that the rights and welfare of subjects are adequately protected and that matters of confidentiality are respected.

The REC assumes responsibility for ethical clearance for human subject research based on ZU policy and procedure.

Vulnerable subjects must be protected from undue influence or coercion to participate and appropriate approval processes must be implemented.  All activities must be in compliance with University Policies and By-Laws.

The Committee will be appointed by the Assistant Provost, Research and Graduate Affairs and will consist of seven representatives. Committee members will be appointed for a period of two years in staggered timings to ensure continuity.  All members of this committee will undertake research ethics training.

The Committee will have the option to seek legal advice when such advice is deemed appropriate.

As required, a Committee on the Use of Animal Subjects in Research will be convened and will operate as a sub-committee of the Research Ethics Committee.

Inquiries for this Committee should be directed to the Office of Research or to the Chair of the Committee.
