Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Higher Education Grants

What are the grant application requirements?

You have to be a UAE national. At the time of the application, you have to be between 21 and 31 years old, and a graduate of Zayed University.

Although I am a UAE national , I am not residing in Abu Dhabi. Can I apply for the grant?

Yes, the grant supports all UAE nationals living in the United Arab Emirates.

Is the grant only awarded to female students?

No, male and female UAE nationals may apply.

I have completed my bachelors degree at a different university, but I have received my masters degree from Zayed University. Can I apply for the grant to enroll in another masters degree program or continue with my Ph.D?

Yes.

I am an international student and I have graduated from Zayed University . I have been admitted to a masters degree program. Can I apply for the grant?

Unfortunately no, this grant is restricted to Emirati nationals. However, the Office of Graduate Studies can provide you with information on  fellowship awards, academic merit-based scholarships and other sources of financial support to pursue your masters degree studies at Zayed University.

2. Academic Requirements:

I have a G.P.A. of 3 (or above), and an IELTS  of  6. Can Zayed University guarantee that I would be awarded the grant?

As the grant is administered by the Emirates Foundation, the final decision will be taken by it and not Zayed University. Also, as this is a highly competitive grant, you will be competing with other Zayed University graduates for a limited number of grants.

I do not have a current IELTS/TOEFL  score. Can I still apply for the grant?

Yes, you can but you must provide evidence of registering to take the test. The final award is dependent on an IELTS 6 or TOEFL (International)  equivalent.

Are good academic grades enough to be awarded the award?

It is a good start, but this would not guarantee the grant being awarded to you. The Emirates Foundation evaluates the complete application package in order to award the grant. This includes your previous studies, your commitment to the program, the quality of the masters degree program you want to pursue, and previous community service.

Could you review my application and tell me if I would be awarded the grant?
No.

Could I apply directly to Zayed University for the grant?

No, you have to apply to the Emirates Foundation.

Do I have to be admitted to a masters degree program in order to apply for the grant?

No, you  can apply for the grant and the master degree or PhD program simultaneously.  The final award will depend on your acceptance to the masters degree program.

Could you transfer my application for admission to your program to the Emirates Foundation?

No. These are two different application processes. It is your responsibility to apply to the grant independently. You should follow the instructions on the website of the Emirates Foundation.

As Zayed University’s fellowship awards are automatic, I do not have to go through an application process. This is not the same case, right?

Yes. Zayed University’s fellowship awards are merit-based fellowships awarded to students in the second year of their study programs in recognition of their academic performance. These awards  are automatic, but remember that this is from a much more limited fund.

I am currently a Zayed University masters degree student. Could I apply for the grant?

Not for the masters degree program you are currently pursuing. The grant only supports students who will commence with a masters degree program. You could apply for the grant once you have completed your current masters degree program, and if you want to continue with another masters degree program or pursue a PhD program.

I am a Zayed University graduate, but I want to apply for admission to a masters degree program that is not a Zayed University program. Can I still apply for the grant?

No, a masters degree program in business is excluded from the grant.

Can I still apply if it is a masters degree program in business offered by a University located internationally?

No, masters degree programs in business are not included in this grant, so it does not matter where  you plan to study.

Which areas are supported by the grant, whether I apply to study at Zayed University or not.

Yes, they are excluded.

Even if I plan to study internationally or at another university located  in the UAE?

Yes, this is only for Masters and PhD programs.

I am aware that Zayed University will be offering a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Museum Studies. Could I apply for a grant for this program?

A: Not at the moment. Please see the website of Emirates Foundation or Zayed University’s website link to the grant for future updates on the matter.

Are grants awarded to a masters degree program in museum studies?

Yes, you could apply to other masters degree programs in museum studies offered at other universities located in UAE and internationally.

I am applying for a masters degree program at a university located internationally and at Zayed University simultaneously.  Should I report this in my application for the grant?

International Student Visas and Accommodation

I am an international student seeking to study at Zayed University. Do I need a student visa?
International students seeking to study at Zayed University must obtain an international student visa. Procedures for sponsorship cannot commence until after the student has accepted an unconditional offer of a place and has paid all fees due as per the Letter of Offer. Acceptance by Zayed University does not guarantee issue of a student visa by the immigration authorities.

I am a GCC National. Do I need a student visa?
No.

When should I apply for an international student visa?
Students should apply for an international student visa before the commencement of their studies. Students arriving in the United Arab Emirates on a tourist or service visa, must exit the country in order to amend the issued visa or entry permit.

Once issued, what is the duration of the international student visa and can it be renewed?
A UAE international student visa is normally valid for a period of 12 months and it can be renewed on a yearly basis. The student is responsible for the student visa application fees. Student visa applications which are rejected will incur costs associated with the visa application process.

Under what circumstances can my student visa be cancelled?
The University reserves the right to monitor the academic progress and attendance of all international students. International students are expected to study full time to meet the requirements of their student visa, and any withdrawals from individual courses are monitored. In case of non-attendance and/or failure to satisfy the minimum requirements for academic progress, the University's sponsorship of the student's visa will be terminated. Students who wish to terminate their studies prior to the expiry date of the visa will have their Zayed University sponsored visa cancelled immediately. In these circumstances, students will have to make arrangements to leave the United Arab Emirates or seek other forms of sponsorship. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain a valid visa at all times.

What documents should I submit to apply for an international student visa?
To apply for an international student visa, a student should submit to the Office of Graduate Studies the following:

  • A passport copy
  • Six passport-size photos
  • A deposit of AED 2,000

As an international student, am I allowed to work part-time with my international student visa?
No.

Is health insurance mandatory for international students?
It is expected of all international students enrolled at a graduate program at Zayed University that they have appropriate and current medical insurance.

Is accommodation available for international students? What about transportation to the campus?
Zayed University does not offer housing or transportation at the moment. Students will need to secure their own residence and transport to both campuses. However, taxis are readily available.
