Summary of College Events

The 2nd International ICST Conference on Digital Forensics & Cyber Crime (ICDF2C)

October 4 - 6, 2010 - Abu Dhabi

The Internet has made it easier to perpetrate traditional crimes by providing criminals an alternate avenue for launching attacks with relative anonymity. The increased complexity of the communication and networking infrastructure is making investigation of the crimes difficult. Clues of illegal activities are often buried in large volumes of data that needs to be sifted through in order to detect crimes and collect evidence. The field of digital forensics is becoming very important for law enforcement, network security, and information assurance. This is a multidisciplinary area that encompasses multiple fields, including: law, computer science, finance, networking, data mining, and criminal justice. The applications of this technology are far reaching including: law enforcement, disaster recovery, accounting frauds, homeland security, and information warfare. This conference brings together practitioners and researchers from diverse fields providing opportunities for business and intellectual engagement among attendees. The conference is organized by the College of Information Technology at Zayed University with the Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (ICST). Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished papers to the International Conference on Digital Forensics. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings and some papers will be selected for journal publication.

The Fourth International Web Services Symposium on Web Services (WSS 2011)

April 20-21 Hammamat, Tunisia (Event cancelled due to instability in Tunisia)

Web Services Symposium is a two days symposium to highlight the latest research and technological advances in the area of Web Services and its ongoing impact on business and IT. World recognized researchers in this field will give keynote presentations. The symposium will be open to academics (student and faculty), researchers, and industry representatives. Web Services are an emerging set of technologies that represent the de facto standards for computer-based transactions in e-commerce and information services. It is increasingly being adopted by industries and governments all over the world to improve services and increase efficiency. While the adoption rate of Web services has been impressive in Europe and North America, a definite trend is emerging locally in the UAE and throughout the Middle-east.

The Second Workshop on Mobile Devices in Computing/IT/Engineering Education

Dubai

The aim of this Faculty Summit is to provide a forum for academics interested in integrating mobile devices into their CS/IT/Engineering courses. It will provide a unique opportunity for CS/IT/Engineering educators at the college and university levels to learn about the potential of mobile devices in raising the level of interest and satisfaction among students and providing an inspiring framework for students to be excited about applied computing education as a challenging subject and a rewarding career goal. Attendees will enjoy a range of talks from researchers, industry speakers, and university faculty members on the integration of mobile devices in CS/IT/Engineering education, the future of mobile services, and a technical tutorial on developing mobile applications. Attendees will also learn about the resources and tools available to them to integrate mobile devices and mobile application development into their courses.  This faculty summit will focus on the future of using mobile devices in the CS/IT/Engineering curricula. Please join us for an in-depth discussion of the opportunities and challenges surrounding this topic.

Besides the student teams competing, there will be a team of faculty that will judge and coordinate the competition. A team from industry will try to penetrate and disrupt all the student teams' networks. Each team acts as if they are new network security administrators for a small company. They receive a network for a fictional business complete with e-mail, Web sites, data files and users.

IT Competition

April 28, 2011 - Abu Dhabi

The College of Information Technology at Zayed University and the Software Engineering Research Laboratory (GELOG) in Montreal in Canada are motivating the undergraduate students to participate to this competition. The students can participate in either category:

  • ZISE Web Application: The students will create a complete web application for Zayed Institute for Software engineering. We hear regularly from industry that software engineering skills are crucial to them, and that they would like to see a stronger software engineering background. Besides, there are few institutes for software engineering in the Middle East in general and almost none in the UAE in specific. Zayed University will establish Zayed Institute for Software Engineering (ZISE) to teach the fundamental principles of software engineering, to certify these engineering skills and give the proper training to the potential employers, to enhance the research in this field, to close the gap between the academia and the industry as well as to build a bridge to other institutes worldwide. The web application will include all the information about ZISE as well as a full implementation for all its services.
  • UOBSERVE Software Specification: The students have to study the UOBSERVE Software Specification to find out the defects. The competition is about finding the highest number of defects in that document. Experts can find up to 200 defects. The students are encouraged to look at standards and models to help them finding these defects and give suggestions of how to improve the document.
  • IT Project: The students may implement a complete IT application in order to solve an existing problem. The students can be creative to demonstrate their IT skills in many field such as Computer Forensics, Computer Programming, Web Applications Development, Telecommunications, etc.
