The topic of her PhD centred on management controls systems change as a result of public sector reform. The study was conducted within a corporatised utility organisation in Queensland that involved the examination and analysis of a number of management accounting systems. That is, performance measurement/management, budgeting, pricing/costing, transfer pricing, incentive schemes, strategic management and administrative and accountability structures. It looked at the interrelationships between them and how they combined interactively to form a cohesive management control system in its entirety. It also explored cultural, power and political issues, and how these inherent aspects affected these systems. Dr James has a number of published articles in prominent accounting journals to which she also referees up and coming research articles by other authors. Wendy has also presented her research at a number of conferences for such organisations as, for example, the Asian Pacific Interdisciplinary Research in Accounting, the British Accounting Association and the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand.
