Bio

Scott Morrison completed the Ph.D. in political science at Columbia University in 2004. Since then he has held two Fulbright grants supporting a year each in Turkey (2003-2004) and the Maldives (2007-2008). He served as postdoctoral fellow and lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures (2004-2006) and visiting assistant professor in the Religion Department (2006-2007) at Columbia University.

Teaching Areas

Political Science: comparative politics, international relations

Research and Professional Activities

Recent and ongoing projects include papers on the political thought of Hasan al-Banna, founder of the Muslim Brethren in Egypt, democratic transition in the Maldives, and a comparative study of civil society and political participation in Yemen and the Maldives. In addition, a book manuscript titled “Secularism Revised: religious freedom, Arab Islam, and equidistance” is in preparation. Recent conference presentations were given at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association and a University of Otago conference on conceptions of peace.
