Bio

Anke Reichenbach is a cultural anthropologist specializing in Middle East Studies, Urban Anthropology, Ethnorhetorics and Media Anthropology. She received her Ph.D. (2000) and her Habilitation (2007) from the University of Leipzig/Germany. She conducted fieldwork in Damascus/Syria, studying politeness in everyday life, and in Bahrain on the humor and laughter of women. Anke Reichenbach has been teaching at Zayed University since 2007. Her current research explores identity politics in the UAE, in particular in the fields of urban development and popular culture.

Research and Professional Activities

Current research activities focus on identity politics in the UAE and explore in particular issues related to the “invention of tradition” in various fields (urban development, popular culture, tourism). 

Anke Reichenbach is a member of the editorial committee of “Encounters. An international journal for the study of culture and society”. She is the editor of the Gulf Series of Zayed University Press.
