Minor in Curatorial Practices

The Department of Art and Design offers a minorin Curatorial Practices. The minor gives studentsthe opportunity to learn about the history, theory,and practice of holding exhibitions. The minorintroduces students to the museum enterpriseburgeoning in the U.A.E. Well-establishedinstitutions such as the Sharjah Art Museumare being joined by the venerable Louvre andGuggenheim and a new National Museum onSaadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.Students in the Curatorial Practicesminor gain insight to the complex challenge ofcreating, collecting, selecting, financing, presenting,maintaining, and sustaining works of art andcultural significance.

Six courses constitute the minor in CuratorialPractices. Five of the courses are specificallyrequired. In consultation with a faculty advisor, astudent selects the sixth course from a set of three.Required:

  • ART 220 Introduction to Art History
  • ART 223 Arts of the Modern World
  • ART 251 Basic Design
  • ART 326 Representation: Exhibition,Display, and Interpretation I
  • ART 430 Curatorial Practices

One of three required:

  • ART 325 History of Design
  • ART327 Representation: Exhibition, Display,and Interpretation II
  • ART 420 Communities, Curatorial Practices,and Collections
