ENG 001 Level 1

This course is an integrated language skills class that provides beginning (pre-production) level students with a range of language learning experiences in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught in conjunction with activities and tasks as students work to achieve the learning objectives of this course.
ENG 002 Level 2

This course is an integrated language skills class that provides beginning (production) level students with a range of language learning experiences based around four main themes. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught in conjunction with activities and tasks as students work to achieve the learning objectives of this course.
ENG 003 Level 3

Students engage in various tasks and activities through the integrated curriculum which allow them to combine reading, writing, listening and speaking activities to create a rich learning environment. At this level, the focus is on comprehension of short written texts of up to 300 words and spoken texts of up to 4 minutes. Students are also expected to write a series of connected sentences as well as paragraphs. Accuracy in writing is emphasized. Speaking tasks focus on interactive exchanges and structured discussions related to textbook content as well as short formal presentations to classmates. Grammar is practiced in all of the output tasks and is specifically taught in a separate strand of the program.
ENG 004 Level 4

Students engage in various tasks and activities through the integrated curriculum which allow them to combine reading, writing, listening and speaking activities to create a rich learning environment. At this level, the focus is on reading texts of up to 400 words and listening to short spoken texts of up to 5 minutes. Students develop their paragraph writing skills. Accuracy in writing is emphasized. Speaking tasks focus on interactive exchanges and structured discussions related to textbook content as well as short formal presentations to classmates. Grammar is practiced in all of the output tasks and is specifically taught in a separate strand of the program.
ENG 005 Level 5

Students engage in various activities through the integrated curriculum which allows them to combine reading, writing, listening and speaking activities to create a rich learning environment. At this level students read texts of up to 500 words. They also take notes from spoken texts of up to 7 minutes in length. Students are introduced to the essay and begin writing four-paragraph essays. The rhetorical patterns at this level are compare and contrast and cause and effect. Accuracy is emphasized, particularly in relation to writing. Speaking tasks focus on interactive exchanges and structured discussions related to textbook content as well as formal presentations to classmates. Listening skills are developed by means of a variety of spoken texts and content-related talks and lectures. Grammar is practiced in all of the output tasks and is specifically taught in a separate strand of the program.
ENG 006 Level 6

Students engage in various activities through the integrated curriculum which allows them to combine reading, writing, listening and speaking activities to create a rich learning environment. At this level, students read texts of up to 700 words in length and listen to spoken texts of up to 8 minutes. Students develop their skills in writing essays and taking notes. The rhetorical patterns at this level are cause and effect and problem-solution. Accuracy is emphasized, particularly in relation to writing. Speaking tasks focus on interactive exchanges and structured discussions related to textbook content as well as formal presentations to classmates. Listening skills are developed by means of a variety of spoken texts and content-related talks and lectures. Grammar is practiced in all of the output tasks and is specifically taught in a separate strand of the program.
ENG 007 Level 7

At this level, students read texts of up to 900 words and listen to spoken texts of up to 10 minutes. Students continue to develop their note-taking and essay writing skills. The rhetorical patterns at this level are problem-solution and position papers. Accuracy is emphasized, particularly in relation to writing. Speaking tasks focus on interactive exchanges and structured discussions related to textbook content as well as formal presentations to classmates. Listening skills are developed by means of a variety of spoken texts and content-related talks and lectures. Grammar is practiced in all of the output tasks and is specifically taught in a separate strand of the program.
ENG 008 Level 8

Students engage in various activities through the integrated curriculum which allows them to combine reading, writing, listening and speaking activities to create a rich learning environment. At this level students read texts of up to 1100 words and listen to spoken texts of up to 15 minutes. They take notes and write essays with four or more paragraphs. Students are expected to be able to write well organized and appropriately supported expository essays. Accuracy is emphasized, particularly in relation to writing. Speaking tasks focus on interactive exchanges and structured discussions related to textbook content as well as formal presentations to classmates. Listening skills are developed by means of a variety of spoken texts and content-related talks and lectures. Grammar is practiced in all of the output tasks. Skills and strategies for the IELTS are incorporated into this course.
