The LEC is a facility that
enables students to develop independent learning skills. A center on each campus allows students to find materials that support their classroom activities. They can also receive guidance from the
coordinators, technicians, instructors and peer tutors who staff it. Students can work at their own pace on materials that support their classroom learning. Equally important, students are involved in
choosing the materials they believe are useful to them thus promoting learner autonomy.
The LECs are currently used in a number of ways:
- As a drop-in center where students can supplement their classroom studies. The materials are provided with answer
keys, so that the student can mark and evaluate her progress.
- As a class, where instructors bring students and work with them on specific materials. This has to be scheduled
with the technician.
- As a meeting place for the Peer Tutoring Program
- As a place where students can use the facilities such as computers, VCRs and tape players in order to enhance their
learning.
In both LECs the students will
develop strategies that will enable them to choose materials that are appropriate to their interests and studies. They will learn how to challenge themselves and in the process they will be taking the first
steps autonomous life-long learning.
